  • Presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro grimaces right after being stabbed in the stomach during a campaign rally in Juiz de Fora Brazil Thursday Sept. 6 2018

In the nation's most emblematic city, Rio de Janeiro, over 200 people marched up the stairs of the Municipal Chamber with banners such as "No More Torture" or "Not Him" and shouting slogans against Bolsonaro and his ideology, Efe news reported.

According to Brazil's Superior Electoral Court, Jair Bolsonaro of the Social Liberal Party won the country's presidential run-off on Sunday. "One of their leaders - Dilma Rousseff - was impeached".

"The PT isn't a homogeneous party".

"Lula-PT-ism has become corrupt and corrupting, and it created an opposing force that is now the biggest force in Brazil".

Lula himself was barred from running because he is serving a 12-year prison sentence for corruption.

For voters, Bolsonaro was a shift from the norm. The former army captain is a far-right conservative leader.

Bolsonaro, a legislator and former military officer, campaigned on his own version of Trump's "America First" slogan and eagerly embraces the term "fake news" to describe critical press coverage.

Bolsonaro's rhetoric has proved beneficial to certain sectors. Yet the University of Chicago-trained economist, who is getting his first taste of public service, met with skepticism from more seasoned politicians. Bolsonaro was referring to the hundreds of millions of reais the Brazilian government spends in advertising each year in local media outlets, mainly for promotions of state-run firms. His chief economic advisor is Paulo Guedes, a University of Chicago-trained free-market economist.

"In the wake of the IPCC's dire warnings earlier this month that we have just twelve years to avert a climate catastrophe, the UN Secretary General said that "...we need to end deforestation and plant billions of trees".

With Bolsonaro like Trump holding the global body in low esteem, it is unlikely he will prioritize the Security Council, Velasco said.

Brazil's Industrial National Confederation already released a statement criticizing the decision. Mariscal said equities remain cheap, the Real is "reasonably priced" and bonds, which have been performing well, still have upside.

May Boeve, executive director at climate NGO 350.org, warned that a Bolsonaro presidency posed "a real threat to human rights at home and a risk to the momentum for climate action overseas".

"I think there's a great opportunity here for the PT and other parties to put themselves on the side of good, to rally around issues historically linked to fundamental and individual rights", said Cesar Zucco, a political scientist at the Getulio Vargas Foundation.

His once-mighty Workers' Party said Tuesday the election was tainted by Moro's probe, and vowed "resistance" to Bolsonaro's government.
