  • Mohammed bin Salman 'told White House' Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist

Saudi Arabia's story on what happened to Khashoggi has evolved from blanket denial of any involvement to a claim that "rogue" operatives carried out a mission to kill him ― supposedly without the knowledge of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Khashoggi, a Saudi critic and prominent columnist for the Washington Post, was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.

The "only logical conclusion", he said, was that those who had killed the Saudi journalist in Istanbul had destroyed his body "to leave no trace behind".

The kingdom has faced a torrent of global condemnation over the murder of Khashoggi, upending the young Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's image as a reformer on the worldwide stage.

The phone call is reported to have taken place on 9 October, a week after Khashoggi disappeared.

Germany and Switzerland have vowed to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia until the case is clarified.

"Everybody is milking this", said Maha Yahya, director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.

The group made a decision to meet with Salman despite the controversy surrounding him because, according to the statement, "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is among the wealthiest, most powerful, and most important nations in the Middle East, in all of history".

Amnesty International campaigners on Friday renamed the road outside the Saudi Arabian embassy in London as "Khashoggi Street" to mark the one-month anniversary of the dissident journalist's murder in Turkey.

The U.S.is urging Saudi Arabia to locate Khashoggi's body and return it to his family as soon as possible.

Istanbul's chief prosecutor announced Wednesday that Khashoggi, who lived in exile in the United States, was strangled immediately after he entered the consulate as part of a premeditated killing and that his body was dismembered before being removed. "To claim otherwise would be ridiculous".

Turkish officials appear to have dismissed a theory that Jamal Khashoggi's body was given to a mystery local collaborator in Istanbul.

She called on governments around the world to take action to reveal the truth, accusing the United States of taking a position "devoid of moral foundation". Khashoggi, who had arrived at the consulate to obtain papers to facilitate his marriage with Turkish girlfriend Hatice, was in the Consul General's room when he was grabbed by the squad.

The attempt to criticise Khashoggi in private stands in contrast to the Saudi government's later public statements decrying his death as a "terrible mistake" and "terrible tragedy", the sources said.

Ankara has repeatedly called for them to be extradited to Turkey for trial.

"Today I am inviting the worldwide community to take serious and practical steps to reveal the truth and to prosecute those involved in a court of law".
