According to a press release by the U.S. Department of State, the United States is closely following the migrant invasion force, in which thousands of nationals from Honduras and other countries continue to make a risky journey through Guatemala and into Mexico.

As the pressure of the upcoming midterm elections bears down on President Donald Trump, he's lashing out in the most predictable way possible: by targetting immigrants and people of color.

While no specific group has said it's responsible for organizing the current caravan, Pueblo Sin Fronteras, founded in 2010, has led asylum-seeking migrants through Central America for more than 15 years, most recently in April - another caravan that drew ire from Trump.

Mexican authorities have taken a firmer stand against this caravan than the one that traversed the country in the spring - partly at the urging of Mr. Trump, who threatened to cancel the trade deal he is planning with Mexico unless officials block entry.

He has said that the situation is a "national emergency" and says he has told border guards and the police to be ready.

Several groups accused the Mexican government in a statement of "arbitrary detentions" and "grave human rights violations" for detaining migrants who tried to enter the country legally and file asylum claims.

The people in this group do not come from any one place - they come from lots of different countries. He's paralyzed and looking for work and better doctors in the U.S. He said he doesn't even have any shoes, since he gave them to his friend.

Mexico's government has reportedly called on the United Nations to help with the 7,000-plus wave of Hondurans, whose numbers have almost tripled as the group broke through border gates to enter Mexico over the weekend.

In interviews along the journey, migrants have said they are fleeing widespread violence, poverty and corruption in Honduras.

Twenty-eight-year-old Carlos Leonidas Garcia Urbina from Tocoa, Honduras, says he was cutting the grass in his father's yard when he heard about the caravan.

In southern Mexico, police in riot gear shadowed the caravan's arrival along a southern highway, but did not impede their journey.

Ahead of the November 6 midterms, Trump has sought to turn the caravan into a symbol of the larger issue of immigration, which the White House believes can be used to drive up turnout among the Republican base. And he adds, "As far as I know there are no terrorists in these four countries, at least beyond the corrupt governments". By swimming or floating across on makeshift rafts, the migrants were able to reach Tapachula, Mexico, a city approximately 23 miles north of the Guatemalan border, as of Sunday.

Some huddled under a metal roof in the city's main plaza Sunday night.

Others lay exhausted in the open air, with only thin sheets of plastic to protect them from ground soggy from an intense evening shower, while some had no plastic at all.
