Trailing in polls, O’Rourke lays into Cruz in Texas debate

O'Rourke responded by evoking a moniker Donald Trump bestowed on Cruz when the pair were bitter rivals during the 2016 Republican presidential primary, saying, "Senator Cruz is not going to be honest with you" and "it's why the president called him Lyin' Ted and its why the nickname stuck". Ted Cruz and Democratic Congressman Beto O'Rourke faced off in an at-times-testy debate in San Antonio Tuesday evening, as both men sought to paint their opponent as the wrong choice to represent the nation's third-largest state.

O'Rourke's comment came in response to Cruz's criticism of the Democrat's desire for a tax on oil production.

O'Rourke criticized Cruz for associating with someone who would say such things about his family.

Cruz laughed it off and tried to turn attention back to polls that show the Democrat falling behind the Republican. Cruz noted O'Rourke is "the only Democratic Senate nominee in the country who has explicitly come out for impeaching President Trump".

While Cruz praised White Castle, O'Rourke is frequently spotted at Whataburger. No Democrat has won any of Texas' almost 30 statewide offices since 1994, the nation's longest political losing streak.

Rep. Beto O'Rourke and Sen. "It's a campaign based on fear", O'Rourke said, "It's the same person who shut down the government of the United States of America for sixteen days, perhaps because he though too many people had too much healthcare". Trump wrote on Twitter. O'Rourke accused Cruz of not doing enough to stand up to Trump when it came to Russian Federation and that the state needs a "full-time senator" rather than someone who concentrates on running for president.

Polls this summer suggested he was staying within striking distance, but Cruz has more recently opened up around 10-point leads. A debate that had been planned for September 30 in Houston was postponed amid the battle over Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, and it has not yet been rescheduled.

Both candidates lobbed attacks throughout, taking more aggressive stances as the race enters the final stretch and Democrats try to keep their fledgling hopes of re-taking the Senate alive despite a hard host of races in many states President Donald Trump won handily in 2016.

O'Rourke has raised eye-popping amounts of money in his bid to unseat Cruz in the midterms this November. Still, Cruz has been a full-throated supporter of Trump's since they battled during the presidential race - and hopes that the joint appearance will assuage some conservatives around the state who were angered by the past animosity.
