The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has arrived in Saudi Arabia for talks with King Salman over the disappearance of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as reports emerged that Riyadh was poised to acknowledge that Khashoggi was killed in its consulate in Istanbul.
Khashoggi, a USA resident, WashingtonPost columnist and leading critic of the powerful Saudicrown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, vanished after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago to get marriage documents.
"The king firmly denied any knowledge of it", said Mr. Trump, who then offered a suggestion by King Salman that it "could have been rogue killers, who knows?"
Media reported that Turkish investigators believe the journalist was murdered inside the consulate, but Saudi Arabiaclaims that Khashoggi went missing after he left the building.
The journalist was a one-time Saudi royal family insider turned critic who left the nation previous year and began writing pieces for The Washington Post.

One of those two individuals said he was told by those close to the Saudi leadership that the kingdom will claim that rogue operatives killed Khashoggi during an interrogation or a rendition attempt that went horribly awry.
Trump dispatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to meet King Salman over the case that has strained the Americans' relationship with the Saudis, carefully cultivated by the USA president.
"It has yet again shown the world that the Saudi government doesn't care about the law, doesn't care about basic human dignity, basic ethos of protecting people who enter your consulate, much less a prominent journalist", Whitson said.
Mr. Trudeau also said talk of Canadian sanctions on Saudi Arabia is premature.

Trump had dispatched Pompeo to speak to the monarch of the world's top oil exporter over Khashoggi's disappearance. Saudi stock index was down 3 percent in early Tuesday trade before it recouped some losses for a decline of 0.5 percent by 0949 GMT. But Khashoggi's disappearance has led several business leaders and media outlets to back out of the upcoming investment conference in Riyadh, called the Future Investment Initiative.
