  • Sale on for Banksy painting that self-destructed at auction

The artist also published a video that states that he secretly built the shredder into the frame in case the work was ever put up for auction.

The announcement was made by Sotheby's today (11 October), as they revealed that the original bidder has agreed to buy the new work for the same price it was hammered at in the room on 5 October: £860,000 (£1.04m with fees).

"It appears we just got Banksy-ed", said Alex Branczik, Sotheby's head of contemporary art for Europe, according to BuzzFeed.

"Following his surprise intervention on the night, we are pleased to confirm the sale of the artist's newly-titled Love Is In The Bin, the first artwork in history to have been created live during an auction".

Sotheby's has described the painting as a "framed work, spray paint and acrylic on canvas", and notes that it's "the first time in auction history that a work of art automatically shredded itself". The corresponding video he posted on his Instagram page. The sale price equalled the artist's previous auction record of about $1.35 million.

It was auctioned off for $1.4 million.

There is a speculation that the auctioneers were aware that a shredder was hidden in the painting.

"Love is in the Bin" will be on view to the public in Sotheby's New Bond Street galleries in London on Saturday and Sunday. The auction house stated that it is "currently in discussions about next steps".

Banksy, who has never disclosed his full identity, began his career spray-painting buildings in Bristol, England, and has become one of the world's best-known artists. "While Banksy's stunt involved destroying the classic artwork using a remote device, this person reportedly took a stanley knife to the expensive piece - which is apparently one of just 600 mint condition prints in the world".

"A man dressed in black sporting sunglasses and a hat was seen scuffling with security guards near the entrance to Sotheby's shortly after the incident", Art Newspaper also reported.
