Donald Trump says his daughter Ivanka would be dynamite at UN

  • Nikki Haley resigns as US ambassador to the United Nations

"She told me probably six months ago", Trump told reporters, '"I want to take a little time off'".

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Oct 9) said he would consider selecting Goldman Sachs executive and former White House adviser Dina Powell as the next US ambassador to the United Nations, and he shot down speculation he would tap his daughter Ivanka for the post.

Haley's name has come up as possible Republican running mate in the last two presidential elections and she could also become a USA senator if fellow South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham takes up a job in the Trump administration, as is often speculated.

Instead of answering directly, he recounted how she has had to work on tough issues, such as Iran and North Korea.

The president earlier Tuesday said he expects to nominate a replacement for the former GOP South Carolina governor in the next two or three weeks - or maybe even sooner.

Speaking to reporters later on Tuesday aboard Air Force One, Trump said he had five people on his short list for United Nations envoy, including former White House adviser Dina Powell, a friend of Haley's.

The prospect of post-midterm changes continues to hang over the West Wing, and Haley's exit was one that has been discussed, according to a senior administration official not authorised to publicly discuss private conversations.

Trump said Haley made the role "more glamorous" and had done a "fantastic job". He insisted later that the delegates were laughing with him, not at him.

The six-month leadtime also coincides with a high-profile spat between Haley and the White House in April, when she drew the President's ire for previewing in a television appearance the administration's planned imposition of a new round of sanctions on Russian Federation.

Haley criticized Trump during the 2016 election campaign but has been the face of his "America First" policies at the United Nations, steering the USA withdrawal from several U.N. programs and ardently defending his hard-line policies against Iran and North Korea over their nuclear programs.

"I don't get confused", Haley said in a sharply worded response to the West Wing.

Haley stayed coy on her reasons for quitting, saying only that it was "important to understand when it's time to stand aside".

The outlet reported that the news shocked a number of senior foreign policy officials in the administration.

"I proudly serve in this administration, and I enthusiastically support most of its decisions and the direction it is taking the country", Haley wrote.

The daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley clashed with then-candidate Trump during the 2016 campaign, denouncing "the siren call of the angriest voices" that disrespected America's immigrants.

But Haley, the first female governor of SC, has often been an unpredictable and independent force in the Trump administration.

Last year, she upset US allies and foes alike by warning that the United States would be "taking names" of countries that backed a U.N. resolution criticizing Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital. She succeeded in convincing Trump that the United Nations served a useful objective for U.S. national interests. She was re-elected in 2014.

South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham for United Nations ambassador, saying "I think he's really happy where he is". That doesn't mean I'd pick her, because you'd be accused of nepotism, even though I'm not sure there's anybody more competent in the world. Menendez said he is concerned about the leadership vacuum she leaves and "the national security impact of her departure at this time of continued disarray for this administration".
