Carolina Panthers beat New York Giants 33-31 in nail-biter

Eric Reid's new Carolina Panthers teammates aren't anxious about whether the safety will demonstrate or protest during the national anthem on Sunday before the Panthers face the New York Giants.

The Giants lost on a 63-yard field with one second remaining on Sunday.

Beckham entered the game with zero touchdown grabs; the four-game draught is the second-longest of his career. Newton threw two interceptions, and the receivers struggled to get open. Even taking aside Beckham's 57-yard beauty to Barkley on a little Mike Shula trickery, Beckham had eight catches for 131 yards and a deep touchdown.

Prior to Sunday's game, Reid said he was "still considering" whether he will continue the protest.

He said his collusion suit against the National Football League "without a doubt" will continue and added that he's still considering other ways to protest during the anthem as he and former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began doing in 2016.

It has been said often but it's worth repeating: Cam Newton is a large man. It's a familiar position after last season's 3-13 finish.

"I just did what I'm supposed to do when they put the ball in my hands", he said after the game.

Newton called it a "subpar" game on his part, but was thrilled Gano helped bail him out. Not only that, but the team held running back Saquon Barkley - the No. 2 overall pick in spring's NFL Draft - to just 48 rushing yards on five attempts.

It wasn't enough. Beckham and Manning undoubtedly weren't alone with their uneven performances - the Giants committed an unthinkable amount of unforced errors. "When your team has an 11-point lead, defensively we should finish games, and we didn't do a great job doing that". He's got a cannon arm, and in any game he might also be the best running back, particularly near the goal line.

The Giants are hoping the 6-foot-6 290-pound Mauro will improve their fortunes in defending the zone reads. That will be key to shutting down this potent Carolina offense.

Panthers safety Eric Reid knelt during the national anthem in protest of racial and social injustice.

Reid stood near midfield until the anthem began, then went to one knee as he did with the San Francisco 49ers from 2016 through last season. Center Ryan Kalil was shaken up late in the fourth quarter and did not return as Tyler Larsen finished the game.
