Democrats suggest past Federal Bureau of Investigation checks on Kavanaugh include evidence of inappropriate behavior

It remains to be seen what kind of light the Federal Bureau of Investigation can shed the claims against Kavanaugh, but one thing is already clear: Many Senate Democrats won't be satisfied with the narrow scope of the probe.

Late Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell set a threshold vote for Friday on Kavanaugh's nomination, moving the Senate toward a potential confirmation roll call over the weekend. But he said the nomination would be over if it was revealed Kavanaugh had lied to the committee in his testimony. "The Senate will vote on this nomination this week".

The main focus of the FBI investigation has been accusations by Christine Blasey Ford that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her while they were in high school.

During a MS rally on Tuesday night, Trump mocked Ford's testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee because there were details of the assault she could not remember. While an interview was conducted with Deborah Ramirez, who said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at Yale, investigators did not, as far as Ramirez's legal team knew, speak to any of the 20 people she said may be able to corroborate her story.

Asked if Trump was anxious that his comments would jeopardise votes from swing Republican senators, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: "I don't think so". "I don't know. Upstairs".

"I had one beer, right?" 'Where was the place?' I don't remember. "And a man's life is in tatters". "I just say it's kind of appalling".

Speaking to reporters early Wednesday afternoon, Murkowski said: "I thought the president's comments yesterday mocking Dr. Ford were wholly inappropriate and in my view unacceptable".

The letter came in response to a tweet from Republicans on the committee which asserted that none of the previous six investigations into Kavanaugh's background unearthed evidence of alleged misconduct.

"I wonder about the wisdom, as much as the crowd loved it, I wonder about the wisdom tactically of him doing that".

Shortly after Prof Ford's dramatic testimony to the Senate committee last week, Mr Trump said she was "very compelling" and described her as a "very fine woman".

"I think that it's a very scary time for young men in America when you can be guilty of something that you may not be guilty of", Trump said Tuesday afternoon outside the White House.

Ron Klain, a veteran Washington attorney and formerchief of staff to Vice Presidents Al Gore and Joe Biden, said there is nothing wrong with maintaining the confidentiality of the report as long as it doesn't make it impossible for senators to digest the information before the vote.

Republicans now hold a 51-49 advantage in the Senate.

White House officials have backed Donald Trump's decision to use a campaign rally to openly mock the woman accusing his Supreme Court nominee of sexual assault.

Dr Ford said she first disclosed the alleged sexual assault in 2012 during therapy sessions with her husband, after they began to fight over her insistence they install a second front door.

On NBC's "Today" show Wednesday, Sen.

In the latest seven-day average in a survey of 4,057 USA adults, 41 percent of respondents opposed Kavanaugh, 33 percent supported him and 26 percent said they did not know.

In the letter, Democrats wrote that the tweet wasn't consistent with what senators learned in a briefing on a confidential background investigation into Kavanaugh's history.

In a Twitter post on Wednesday, Trump did not back away from his comments at the rally, instead attacking Kavanaugh's Democratic critics. It's just not right. She said Ford has "been treated like a Faberge egg by all of us, beginning with me and the president", and said Trump was merely "pointing out factual inconsistencies".
