  • Everybody on plane survives crash landing in Pacific lagoon

The airline said the plane, which was involved in a collision with another aircraft earlier this year, had "landed short of the runway".

There were also two Australians who, according to a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson, did not request any consular assistance from the Australian embassy in Pohnpei.

"I thought we landed hard", he said.

Within minutes, local fishermen were on the scene with a flotilla of small motor boats to rescue people.

Earlier reports said seven passengers and crew members were taken to a hospital but no one suffered serious injury.

"One would think that they might be afraid to approach a plane that's just crashed".

The group was on its way to the Philippines for a vacation when the Boeing 737-800 aircraft crashed into the lagoon as it attempted to land at an airport in Chuuk Island on Friday, the DFA said in a statement. "And I thought, well, this is not the way it's supposed to happen".

While the airline did not provide details of the cause of the crash, it said it had received information that "the weather was very poor with heavy rain and reduced visibility at the time of incident". The airline said the plane landed short of the runway.

Jaynes said those aboard managed to wade through waist-deep water to the emergency exits on the sinking plane.

"I was really impressed with the locals who immediately started coming out in boats", Jaynes said in an interview with a missionary in Chuuk, Matthew Colson, that was posted online and shared with The Associated Press.

The clip shows sailors using the aircraft's right wing as a makeshift mooring for the boat.

It's the national airline of Papua New Guinea, a nation that makes up the western half of the giant island of New Guinea known for remote jungle-clad mountains and tribes that rarely make contact with the outside world. Chuuk is in the Caroline Islands between the Northern Mariana Islands to the north and Papua New Guinea to the south.
