Chinese Media: Trump Election Allegations 'Crazy Talk,' 'Creative Strategy'

  • U.S. President Donald Trump speaks as he chairs a UN Security Council briefing on counter-proliferation

"We do not and will not interfere in any country's domestic affairs", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the Security Council meeting, through a translator.

"Regrettably, we found that China has been trying to interfere in 2018 election against my administration", the president said.

The president has at times expressed scepticism over whether Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, a subject that remains a thorn in Trump's side.

There are concerns that the November elections could also be vulnerable.

Opening the UN Security Council meeting in NY, which was held to discuss countering nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, Mr Trump accused China of trying to interfere, without providing specific evidence.

Trump also doubled down on his earlier accusations that Beijing was looking to meddle in the US congressional elections later this year, but did not offer any specific details.

Some in the audience also grumbled during Trump's remarks when he said "we reject the ideology" of globalism.

The editorial went on to say that his position on trade with China is something that could hurt the president's party in the upcoming mid-term elections and his aspirations for re-election in 2020.

Later Wednesday, Trump said in a tweet: "China is actually placing propaganda ads in the Des Moines Register and other papers, made to look like news". The notice, published by the China Digital Times, said the Chinese tariffs are meant to split "apart different domestic groups in U.S".

President Trump has campaigned for such a deal in the past, noting the current agreement has caused Japan to accumulate a massive surplus.

But they added they are concerned about activity from Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.

Trump was broadly criticised after he appeared to side with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the U.S. intelligence community on the subject when they met in Helsinki, Finland, in July. But I want to open up China to our farmers, and to our industrialists, and our companies.

At no point on Wednesday did the president make similar pronouncements about Russian Federation, which the USA intelligence community long ago accused of engaging in a coordinated influence campaign to boost Mr. Trump's chances of being elected in 2016.

But Trump followed up his accusations with a series of tweets accusing China's government of paying for newspaper space in the U.S. state of Iowa to push its message.

The high-profile Security Council meeting came a day after Trump poured scorn on the "ideology of globalism" and heaped praise on his own administration's achievements in a speech to the UN General Assembly that drew head shakes and even mocking laughter from his audience of fellow world leaders.

Trump spoke to the Security Council on a number of issues but made a point of criticizing the regime in China for working against global peace.

The president went on to say USA agencies are working to monitor the situation.

Earlier in September, Mr Trump directed officials to impose tariffs on $200bn (£151bn) in Chinese goods - the latest move to combat what the U.S. says are China's unfair trade practices, such as state subsidies. Only under the guise of foreign interference do the American people feel that they need someone like Trump.

Fleming said it's time businesses and the general public realized the extent and the seriousness of China's true intentions: to rule the world.
