Kavanaugh hearing: Republican senators abandon female prosecutor Rachel Mitchell

  • Kavanaugh Vote Is Scheduled for Friday Now; Grassley Vows No More Delays

They say it's inappropriate because a full investigation into Dr.

Mitchell, who has decades of experience prosecuting sex crimes, "has been recognized in the legal community for her experience and objectivity", committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, said in a statement Tuesday.

Dr. Ford: "That makes a lot of sense".

"I think the prosecutor is very tuned into Ford's needs", she said. "As a former prosecutor, I can't imagine what I would be asking about when I have no investigative material on which to rely". On Sunday, California Sen.

Christine Blasey Ford are set to testify Thursday morning before the Senate Judiciary Committee, after days of negotiations with the committee to set a date and time.

Mitchell typically tries to put people accused of sex crimes in prison, but on Thursday (Friday NZ time) she was in the unusual and hard position of trying to chip away at the credibility of a woman. Deborah Ramirez, a classmate of Kavanaugh's at Yale University, told The New Yorker that he exposed his penis to her at a party when they were both students.

But with Kavanaugh at the witness table, he made it clear which side he came down on in the extraordinary day of testimony. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the ranking Democrat on the committee, an accusation Feinstein vehemently denied. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, shouted after 5 p.m.

In any case, it would take a minor political miracle for Kavanaugh to gain a Supreme Court seat after today's hearing - even though it would be better for the country for us to uphold an evidentiary standard without destroying a man's life.

Mitchell is a career prosecutor and registered Republican from Arizona who specializes in sex abuse cases.

Grassley added that any further delay would be unfair to both Ford and Kavanaugh, whom Grassley said "has asked the committee repeatedly for the chance to testify as soon as possible ..." It's necessary to establish the credibility of the witness.

Others HuffPost spoke to had a less charitable explanation for his decision.

"The central point is that there is no precedent for this Committee to bring in outside counsel for the sole goal of shielding the members of the Committee from performing their responsibility to question witnesses", Bromwich said.

Robert S. Bennett, the Washington attorney who would later represent President Bill Clinton during the scandal involving his improper relationship with Monica Lewinsky, was the outside counsel for the inquiry into the Keating Five scandal led by Democratic Sen.

New York Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal told Ford, "I believe you". In 2003, the state named her "Arizona's outstanding sexual-assault prosecutor" and Prosecutor of the Year in 2006.

The Associated Press reports that Mitchell in 2014 prosecuted the case of a former church volunteer in Scottsdale, Ariz. who molested children he supervised as a church babysitter and camp counselor over a period of seven years.

"In this very public arena, with these incredibly high stakes, we need to get this right", they wrote.

"You're looking for a fair process".

Who is prosecutor Rachel Mitchell? Mitchell succeeded in showing that Ford couldn't remember turning over psychiatric records to The Washington Post, that Democrats had wildly overplayed their hand with regard to Ford's fear of flying, that she couldn't remember much about the night in question.

About 40 minutes into his opening statement, Kavanaugh said, "We never expected that it would devolve into this".

Hatch said he's not going to second-guess having prosecutor Rachel Mitchell do the questioning for Republicans.
