Iran's president, Hassan Rouhani, told a news conference near the U.N. that the sanctions violate a U.N. Security Council resolution backing the nuclear deal.

President Donald Trump called out Iran in his remarks to the General Assembly.

Rouhani also referred to the laughter in the General Assembly audience on Tuesday when Trump in his speech boasted of America's economy and what he described as unprecedented achievements by his administration.

Trump said America's economy is booming like never before and since his election, the USA has added Dollars 10 trillion in wealth.

"In two years, my administration has accomplished more than nearly any administration in the history of our country", Trump began.

"In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than nearly any administration in the history of our country", Trump said, prompting laughter.

Donald Trump, whose political ascent has been full of firsts, yesterday achieved another rare feat - bringing laughter to the solemn UN General Assembly.

Tensions between the United States and the European Union over Iran soared into the open on Tuesday after the Europeans announced plans for a legal framework to preserve business with Tehran and evade new USA sanctions.

"Moving forward, we are only going to give foreign aid to those who respect us and frankly, are our friends", Trump said.

Iran says the signatories to the JCPOA need to bear the cost of standing up to U.S. sanctions in order to keep the deal alive following Washington's unilateral and illegal withdrawal.

Top of the President's concerns after laying out the "urgent importance" of countering nuclear, biological and chemical weapons use everywhere, was the JCPOA, commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal.

Rouhani invited the United States to come back to negotiations within the U.N. Security Council, which endorsed the nuclear deal.

Rouhani said Tehran would remain in the agreement - known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action - despite the U.S. withdrawal, as long as the other signatories held up their end of the deal to open the door to trade.

In his General Assembly address, Rouhani was to stress that Iran continues to stick to the 2015 deal and portray the United States as a pariah for breaking its global commitments. We do not wish to attack them.

For Iran, Trump reinforced his decision to abandon the 2015 nuclear treaty and reimpose sanctions on the country - and said there will be more sanctions to punish the regime.

A gavel-wielding Mr Trump took a swipe at China, accusing Beijing of working against his Republican Party in upcoming midterm elections as payback for their growing trade war, a charge China's foreign minister said was "unwarranted". And we also have to help all those that have invested and believed in this opening.

For now, though, Rouhani made clear that Iran is not looking for a clash with the US.

"We say do not sanction illegally and unfairly", Rouhani said.

"They learned how to synthesize them, they are building labs for that, and this is something we have been warned about for a long time". "We only ask that you honor our sovereignty in return". "This does not benefit the Iranian people, it does not benefit the American people or Europe".
