Paul Ryan Urges GOP to Let Trump Decide Rosenstein's Future

President Donald Trump on Wednesday referred to a Kurdish journalist as "Mr. Kurd" during a marathon press conference following the United Nations General Assembly in NY.

Questions about Rosenstein's future were revived after a New York Times report tha, in May 2017 discussions with Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department officials, he suggested the idea of secretly recording Trump - remarks his defenders insist were merely sarcastic - and of invoking the Constitution to have the Cabinet consider removing Trump from office.

Trump also revealed he may call Rosenstein tonight or tomorrow to delay the meeting, saying "I don't want to do anything that gets in the way" of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing featuring testimony from Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused the judge of sexually assaulting her during a party in high school.

"Not wanting to fire Rod Rosenstein is consistent with what I have understood for weeks, not just days, " said Rep. Mark Meadows, a North Carolina Republican who talks to Trump often.

"I hope the Justice Department saw that, Bret Stephens", Wallace said.

Trump and Rosenstein had been scheduled to meet Thursday.

In that column, the soon-to-be chief of staff mentioned Rosenstein.

Allies such as Fox News host Sean Hannity have accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation of leaking the damaging information on Rosenstein in the hope that Trump would fire him, setting off another firestorm just weeks before elections that will determine political control of Congress. "I think he may have some confidence that history will be kinder to him than politicians are". That meeting was scheduled after The New York Times reported that Rosenstein allegedly suggested wearing a "wire" while with Trump.

Trump said "I would certainly prefer" not to fire Rosenstein, but he did not make a commitment one way or another before meeting with him face-to-face.

The question now is for how much longer. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation.

Within weeks of being confirmed as deputy attorney general, he was engulfed in controversy by writing a memo critical of then-FBI Director James Comey, which the White House cited as justification for Comey's firing.
