I'm confident we're going to win, confident that he'll be confirmed in the very near future.

Trump has continued to highlight Kavanaugh's qualifications for the Supreme Court, touting his great legal mind and character.

Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky accused Democrats of rushing to convict Kavanaugh and "destroy his good name" with unproven allegations, abandoning any presumption of innocence - a bedrock principle of American jurisprudence.

Increasingly confident that Kavanaugh will survive Thursday's hearing - where Dr. Christine Blasey Ford is scheduled to speak about her allegations of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh from 1982 - Republicans set up a possible Friday vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee on the Kavanaugh nomination.

Trump then turned his ire towards second accuser Deborah Ramirez, who told the New Yorker that Kavanaugh thrust his penis into her face without her consent at a house party during their Yale University days. He accused Republicans of continually changing conditions of how Ramirez could tell her story.

In New York, President Trump accused Democrats of mounting "a con game" and heaped scorn on a second accusation leveled against Kavanaugh, that he exposed himself at a college party decades ago.

Those elections could shift the balance of power in Congress as Democrats seek to regain control from conservatives.

US Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh leaves his house as US Marshalls try to hide him from cameras with an umbrella in Chevy Chase, Maryland, US, September 25, 2018. "Republicans need to get this right".

"I think everybody in America understands there is a presumption of innocence", McConnell added. "The only thing you could be concerned about is his character", Graham said. "So at this point, it's a moot question".

Each senator on the 21-member panel will be allowed five minutes to ask questions, said committee spokesman Taylor Foy. Asked whether he thought Ford's claims were also fabricated, Hatch said, "I think she's honest, at least I hope so".

Kavanaugh has denied all the allegations and told Fox News in an exclusive interview on Monday that he wants a "fair process where I can defend my integrity, and I know I'm telling the truth". One senator asked if Hill was a "scorned woman".

"There is no reason to delay the hearing any further".

Women and men are sharply split over whether to confirm Kavanaugh.

A former member of the FBI's top brass in its NY office blasted Sen.

"Thirty-six years ago, nobody ever knew about it or heard about it, and now a new charge comes up and she said it might not be him, and there were gaps and she said she was totally inebriated, and she was all messed up", Trump said. And it might have been him.

Ahead of the hearing with Ford, Republicans have been rallying to Kavanaugh's defense, accusing Democrats of waging a "smear campaign" against the appellate judge and stressing that there should be a presumption of innocence.

Comments by Murkowski on Tuesday after she met with McConnell could be an ominous sign for Kavanaugh. "Certainly we would be open to that, and that process could take place on Thursday", Sanders said. He said he had a positive individual meeting with Kavanaugh before the confirmation hearings. "I've always treated women with dignity and respect", he said.

Charles Grassley, the top Republican on the committee, emphasized that the scheduling was procedural and only for a "potential" vote "if we're ready". "But I think she's sincerely wrong".
