  • Australia joins bid to rescue injured Indian sailor in remote ocean

Indian Navy Lieutenant Commander Abhilash Tomy, who was stranded in the Indian Ocean after his boat got damaged during the Golden Globe Race, has been safely rescued, the Indian Navy confirmed on Monday afternoon.

The naval sailor-cum-sportsperson participating in the GGR-2018, was caught in a huge storm on Friday, 5,020 km from Cape Comorin, India and 3,500 km from Perth, Australia, in the Indian Ocean.

Earlier, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which is coordinating the rescue, had said it expected a French fisheries patrol vessel to reach Tomy's yacht as soon as 0700 GMT.

Race officials had sent messages to Tomy informing him of the latest updates to the rescue plan, but were concerned when he no longer returned their messages, suggesting he was possibly "now too weak to transmit", they said.

"Yes, he has been rescued by a ship and what I can say is he is mentally stable".

The race, however, is on somewhere else - one to reach Commander Tomy, who is 1,900 nautical miles away from land.

Finally, on Monday, French fishing vessel Osiris braved the waters to reach the Thuriya and took the injured sailor on board.

In the original Golden Globe race, several participants were forced to quit, one refused to finish despite being in the lead and another died by suicide after stepping off his boat.

The 39-year-old Kirti Chakra victor created history when he successfully undertook a solo mission, circumnavigating the globe non-stop on a boat powered by winds, in 2013.

The two men are to be taken to Amsterdam Island where they will be given a full medical examination. Tomy, who was representing India at the Golden Globe Race 2018 on an indigenously built sailing vessel "Thuriya" and was in third position out of 11 global participants, suffered a setback.

He will be transferred to nearby island Ile Amsterdam by evening and an Indian Navy frigate will then take him to Mauritius for medical attention, India's Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in a Twitter post. Entrants can sail using yachts and equipment that were available when Sir Robin Knox-Johnston raced in 1968-69.

He said the situation was being monitored at Naval Headquarters in New Delhi, as well as by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at Melbourne, Australia.

An global rescue effort is underway to save a seriously injured solo yacht racer whose vessel is stricken in a remote part of the Indian Ocean, 3,200 kilometres off the coast of Western Australia. Given that his stricken vessel is only capable of making a few knots, VMG, and given the remoteness of his location, McGuckin wisely understood that requesting help now would place rescue crews-not to mention himself-in considerably less danger than if he actually required rescue during a future storm.
