Tiger Woods is on the brink of completing one of sport's most sensational comebacks by winning the Tour Championship at East Lake today. His flop shot didn't get up the hill and rolled back toward him, and his next pitch was a bump-and-run played to perfection that kept him from another double bogey. "It's hard to make birdies, and on top of that, it's hard to get the ball close".

"Simple math says that if I play a clean card, that guys behind me have to shoot 67 to force into extra, " he said. On Sunday, that distinction will go to McIlroy, who shot a 66 and whose 95 nonconsecutive weeks at the top of men's golf is the second-longest reign of any active player. "That's basically what they're doing".

He is now just two tournament wins behind Sam Snead for the all-time record, pocketing the $US1.62 million ($2.23m) in prize money after finishing two shots ahead of fellow American Billy Horschel, with Dustin Johnson two shots further back in third.

He made the turn at 13 under par, while Englishman Rose was eight under after a three-putt bogey at the ninth hole.

Woods surged into the lead starting with a wedge to 4 feet on No. 12, an 8-foot par save on the 13th, an 18-foot birdie on the 14th, and a tee shot that flirted with the edge of the peninsula green on the par-3 15th.

On Saturday at East Lake, Tiger Woods was his best version. He thought he could gouge it out of the rough and over the tree to just short of the green, but he misjudged the lie.

"I've been through a lot to get to this point", Woods said.

"I don't have to shoot 63 or 64 and hope I get help".

He started the week second in the standings behind Bryson DeChambeau, who appears to be out of contention after a 75 that left him equal second-last.

Now his name has been atop the leaderboard for consecutive rounds, and it's not an accident.

But for what Woods put his body through over the previous five years and how much his game has evolved even just inside of this season, it was certainly as special and unique a win as he's had in his career. He needs to capture the Tour Championship and have Rose drop to a fifth-place tie or worse to have a chance at his third FedEx Cup title. He was five shots behind. It was a misplayed chip late on the back nine at The Open and a collection of missed putts at the PGA Championship, although in his defense it's unlikely anyone could have caught Brooks Koepka at Bellerive.

Woods' last victory came 1,875 days ago in August 2013 when he captured the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

He has never been in better position to show he's all the way back from four back surgeries that once made him fear he might never play again.
