Lawyers for Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were teenagers, said Saturday that she has accepted the Senate Judiciary Committee's request to testify about her allegation next week.

Lawyers for Ford and bipartisan representatives of the committee came to a tentative agreement for a Thursday hearing after a short but productive phone call late Saturday, said a person briefed on the matter, who was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity.

A mock questioning of Brett Kavanaugh did not go so well, according to a report in the Washington Post.

The clinical psychology professor accused Judge Kavanaugh - Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee - of pinning her to a bed at a party in Maryland in the early 1980s when she was 15.

Republicans had hoped to push through a successful confirmation of the president's pick to join the Supreme Court before oral arguments begin on October 1.

Trump's searing reproach defied the Senate Republican strategy, and the advice of White House aides, of not disparaging Ford while firmly defending his nominee and the tight timetable for confirming him.

President Donald Trump, who nominated Mr Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, has waded into the issue, claiming that if the alleged attack was that "bad", she would have filed charges at the time.

Max Young, a spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, said, "At approximately 2:30 Republicans sent her a proposal and gave her a 5 p.m. deadline".

Ford also requested that at no point during any potential hearing would she be in the same room as Kavanaugh. "We're not going to let her determine how many people we call" and on outside counsel.

Republicans on the committee and Ford's lawyers had disagreed on numerous counts.

Among their list of requests, Ford's lawyers asked that the committee only allow senators to ask questions and that Ford be able to call other witnesses.

"Its sole goal is to bully Dr. Ford and deprive her of the ability to make a considered decision that has life-altering implications for her and her family", Katz said in the letter. Unfortunately for Ford's story, Keyser released a statement saying that she's never met Kavanaugh and, like everyone else listed as party attendees, has no recollection of any such party.

In response, Kelly tweeted that Feinstein had no way to know if Ford was a survivor of attempted rape.

In addition to Kavanaugh, Ford claimed that three other teens were at the party that occurred circa 1982, although she is not sure of the year or location.

On Friday, Trump abandoned any restraint over Blasey Ford as he demanded that the Republican-controlled Senate get on with confirming Kavanaugh - and so tilt the highest USA judicial body further to the right before November's crucial mid-term elections.

A White House official said it appeared that Ford's lawyers were trying to prolong negotiations. Given all the time that's passed, I wondered if perhaps Ford had actually been to such a party and suffered an assault, but it was with someone else and her mind was just filling in a blank with Kavanaugh's name.

"She has already been forced out of her home and continues to be subjected to harassment, hate mail, and death threats".
