It is now unrecognisable as anything remotely like a hurricane - more a vast elongated streak of low pressure stretching out across the Atlantic. Nevertheless, traditional business models are no longer sustainable and high-quality publications, like ours, are being forced to look for new ways to keep going.

With muddy river water still washing over entire communities on Friday, eight days after Hurricane Florence slammed into land with almost 3 feet of rain, new evacuation orders forced residents to flee to higher ground amid a sprawling disaster that's beginning to feel like it will never end.

Flooding could begin early next week, officials said during a community meeting on Thursday.

To the north in Georgetown County, water continued to drain into the five rivers and several reservoirs that run through the county of 60,000 people as officials prepared to hand out thousands of sandbags on Saturday.

Of the 44 people killed, three have been in Virginia, 32 in North Carolina and nine in SC, officials said. Duke Energy issued a high-level emergency alert after floodwaters from the Cape Fear River overtopped an earthen dike and inundated a large lake at a closed power plant near Wilmington, North Carolina.

North Carolina governor Roy Cooper says the state is still tallying its storm damage, but says it will be in the billions. Blackhawk helicopters were used to pluck many of them to safety. About 10,000 people remained in shelters.

In cities well inland, like Fayetteville, North Carolina, the floodwaters are continuing to rise, even as the main remnants of the storm moved over the Mid-Atlantic states and into New England on Tuesday.

About 56,000 homes and business remain without power as of Friday afternoon.

One week after Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane, North Carolina was still feeling its effects, Cooper said. "Some locations won't see rivers crest until this weekend and flooding won't subside until next week", he said in a Twitter post.

Speaking in Las Vegas, President Donald Trump said SC is in for a "tough one" as flood waters keep rising.

"Cenospheres are moving from the 1971 ash basin to the cooling lake and into the Cape Fear River", it added.

Officials had anxious the water would overwhelm several pits where coal ash had been stored, potentially contaminating rivers.

Sampling waterways in eastern North Carolina after Hurricane Matthew showed a temporary increase in concentrations of some bacteria and pollutants in spots, according to a 2017 report from the state's Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is one of the leading hog-producing states in the country.
