Rap mogul 'Suge' Knight to serve 28 years in murder plea deal

  • Suge Knight sentenced to 28 years in prison

Knight reportedly fled the scene of the incident before authorities arrived. His no contest plea came days before his trial was scheduled to begin on Monday (September 24).

The incident, which was captured on surveillance video, took place following an argument over Straight Outta Compton, a biopic about the pioneering rap group NWA.

TMZ reports Knight plead no contest to a charge of voluntary manslaughter, for which he will serve a total of 28 years.

Knight's lawyers maintain he was acting in self-defence as he fled armed attackers when he ran over Mr Carter and Mr Sloan. As part of the agreement the murder charges were dropped, leaving Knight to serve a sentence for voluntary manslaughter after admitting using a "deadly and unsafe weapon". Knight claimed that he unintentionally ran over Carter and hit another man while trying to escape because he thought the men were going to shoot him. The court now sees him as a repeat offender.

On Thursday, while Coen read legal language about the plea and told Knight he was subject to deportation if he was not a citizen, Knight said "ICE is coming to get me?" to a smattering of laughs. Knight lost control of the company after it was forced into bankruptcy.

Suge's prior felony convictions also made this sentencing much harsher. The 28 years sentence is extraordinarily stiff for a guilty plea for manslaughter.

Death Row Records launched stars such as Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur but collapsed in 1996 when Knight was jailed for violating a probation order by beating up a rival in Las Vegas. Both rap murders remain unsolved.
