In January 2006, Sarah Whiley, 21, died after being mauled by up to three bull sharks while swimming with friends in waist-deep water at Amity Point, North Stradbroke Island.

The girl, who was on holiday with her father and sister, is in a critical condition and will undergo surgery.

The incident occurred within 24 hours of an attack on a Tasmanian woman in the same area.

The 46-year-old woman, a tourist, is in hospital in a critical condition after a shark mauled her upper thigh.

"Her status at the moment could be called critical until further information is released".

Managing director Christophe Vanek says all its clients on the water have been warned to be vigilant and refrain from swimming in Cid Harbour and the broader Whitsundays for the foreseeable future.

On Friday, a Queensland Shark Control Program contractor will deploy three shark control drumlines - a system of buoys "designed to remove larger, risky sharks from an area", according to the Fisheries spokesman. The Queensland Government's shark control program operates at 85 of the state's most popular beaches.

She had been on a yacht before she was bitten and a doctor in a nearby vessel helped low the bleeding before a rescue helicopter arrived and took her to hospital.

A RACQ CQ Rescue spokeswoman said the rescue helicopter is en route to Cid Harbour. "There was quite a lot of blood around the boat", he said.

She was pulled from the water and later winched from Sawmill Bay onto a RACQ Rescue helicopter.

The helicopter then stopped at Proserpine to refuel, allowing blood from a local hospital to be transfused and other medical treatment given.

"The main thing was to keep her alive and conscious".

"Certainly quick response, and I guess if we weren't in the area the emergency doctor wouldn't have known there was an issue, so very fortuitous that time, people and resources were there when we needed them". As the RACQ CQ Rescue crew were unable to winch off the yacht, the injured woman was put into a dinghy and taken 100 metres from the boat.
