  • Trump says U.S. considering permanent military presence in Poland

Donald Trump has said he was considering a Polish request to establish a permanent United States military base in Poland as a bulwark against Russian Federation, noting that Warsaw was prepared to pay "billions" for the facility.

"Poland is willing to make a very major contribution for the United States to come in and have a presence in Poland", Trump said, according to a White House transcript of the press conference. "The [Polish] president offered us much more than $2 billion, so we're looking at it".

At a joint news conference with Duda, Trump said he is open to the idea if Poland comes up with the money to offset the cost.

Despite espousing an "America First" foreign policy strategy, President Donald Trump is considering opening "Fort Trump" - a permanent military base in Poland. It's about training ranges, it's about maintenance facilities at the base, all these kinds of things, it's a host of details we've got to study alongside the Poles. "And I firmly believe that this is possible".

After months of pushing for a permanent USA military presence in Poland as a bulwark against Russian Federation, the Polish president offered President Donald Trump a new incentive tailored to his real estate sensibilities: naming rights.

The European Commission could ask the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to give its opinion as soon as today on the legality of a controversial judicial law introduced by Poland earlier this year. "We're looking at that more and more from the standpoint of defending really wealthy countries".

Currently, 3,000 US troops are deployed on a rotating basis in Poland, according to The Associated Press, a total which the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally is pressing the United States to increase.

He cited Russia's invasion of Georgia in 2008, its annexation of Crimea in 2014, and more recently, violations of ceasefire agreements in the provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine, as tangible "threat of aggression".

"I think it's a very aggressive situation. I feel that he's right".

Poland seeks to become the "main ally" of the United States in Europe, according to Poland's Interior Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, who described the prospects for a USA base on his country's soil as a "real possibility". "They respect force. They respect strength, as anyone does, and we have the greatest strength in the world, especially now". Duda said Russian Federation could use supplies for "political blackmail", while Trump suggested it was "very unfortunate" that Germany would would be sending "billions and billions of dollars a year" to Russian Federation to pay for fuel.
