European Union to Back Down and Allow Tech to Keep Irish Border Open

  • The mayor of London Sadiq Khan is pushing for a second Brexit referendum.

May has ruled out holding a second referendum after the vote two years ago to leave the European Union.

"I am very surprised that the prime minister triggered Article 50 and started the United Kingdom down this very tight timetable to have a Brexit plan before she had a plan", he said.

But he told reporters on Monday that a technical fix to the Irish border issue reported by The Times newspaper could allow for a proper Brexit deal to be clinched.

With just six months to go until the United Kingdom leaves the EU the IMF's Christine Lagarde says she "very much hopes and prays that there will be a deal between the European Union and the UK".

There is feeling around Westminster and Brussels that a Brexit deal could be within touching distance.

Though he was reported to have said last week that his focus was on forcing Mrs May to ditch her plan, speculation about a leadership challenge isn't going away.

But she cast doubt on whether the European Union would offer a better deal if MPs rejected it, adding: "I believe we'll get a good deal, we'll bring that back from the European Union negotiations, put that to Parliament".

UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn leaves the stage after delivering a speech at Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, May 24, 2018.

The report also said the Treasury and Bank of England should be prepared for the possibility of "sharp declines in sterling and other asset prices" and the Bank should be ready to act to ensure the financial system has adequate liquidity.

"We plan to fight very, very hard to make mobility straight forward, regulations transparent and efficient so that this is less of an issue".

The scientific community is calling on her government to retain a close association with European science, in the form of a "closest possible associate membership" within the overall deal with the EU.

But with time running out for London and Brussels to thrash out a Brexit deal, the British government is preparing plans for a no-deal Brexit.

Former foreign minister Boris Johnson, who quit in July in protest at the Chequers plan, launched a fresh attack on it in his weekly newspaper column on Monday. "There is a lot of talk about various issues around Brexit and we are anxious that in all these talks and negotiations, somehow science should not take a back seat", said Prof.

Her comments in a BBC Panorama interview came as Boris Johnson mounted another attack on Mrs May's strategy, claiming that the issue of the Irish border is being used to turn the United Kingdom into a "vassal state" and that talks will end in a "spectacular political vehicle crash".

May, the centre-right Conservative Party's leader, said she was focused on securing a Brexit deal rather than her own future, in a BBC television interview out Sunday.

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox - another top Leaver in the cabinet - said Brussels had made "reassuring noises" in recent weeks on the Brexit talks.

"We are open, but whatever happens, there has to be a backstop".

UUP MEP Jim Nicholson said unionists' first priority must be that "the constitutional integrity" of the Union wasn't "diminished by Brexit - deal or no deal".
