  • Kipchoge barely saw a rival as he won his third Berlin Marathon

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge celebrates winning the Berlin Marathon setting a new world record on September 16, 2018 in Berlin.

Kipchoge arrived on the world marathon scene at Hamburg in 2013 following a successful track career that left him with a collection of Olympic medals and world titles.

"They say you miss two times but you can't miss the third time", he said in reference to his two previous failed attempts to break the world record in Berlin.

"So I want to thank everyone who has helped me", said Kipchoge, who a year ago took part in the Nike Breaking Two project, where he ran 2:00:25 with the aid of "illegal" in and out pacemakers.

Kenya's Gladys Cherono also smashed the Berlin marathon coming first in the women's race after running 2:18:10 (unofficial) and setting a new course record and world-leading time.

The 33-year-old is widely seen as the greatest marathon runner of the modern era and showed his class as he pulled ahead of his competitors early in the race.

"Congratulation my friend, Eliud Kipchoge, for breaking the world marathon record".

At that point Kipchoge was well within Dennis Kimetto's world record of 2: 02:57 and it was just a question of what time he would clock.

Kipchoge, who in 2017 took part in the Nike Breaking Two project, where he ran 2:00:25 with the aid of "illegal" in and out pacemakers, started off at a sizzling pace.

Fellow Kenyan Gladys Cherono won the women's race with a course record and best time of the year of 2:18:11, leaving Ethiopians Ruti Aga and pre-race favourite Tirunesh Dibaba in second and third place. "But I would treat it as a personal best." he said before the race as reported by New York Times. "It was really hard [during the last 17 kilometres] but I was truly prepared to run my own race".

Amos Kipruto finished second in 2:06:22, while former world record holder Wilson Kipsang emerged third in 2:06:47, in what will be a historic race for the marathoners.
