  • The former president of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is backing another embattled U.S. athlete... this time coming to the defense of Colin Kaepernick

Houston Texans safety Justin Reid said Nike's new ad campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick means a lot to him, and that he supports the former National Football League quarterback.

Kaepernick was the first in a series of National Football League (NFL) stars to kneel during the United States national anthem before matches.

In the two-minute advert Kaepernick narrates before appearing halfway through.

Other celebrities have also expressed their support for Kaepernick, either by retweeting the ad or sharing the #ImWithKap, #JustDoIt and #TeamNike hashtags.

The ad's universal theme is about athletes pushing for bigger dreams.

It features young athletes who compete amid various challenges while touching on issues of gender, disabilities and weight loss among others.

Williams, who is through to her first US Open semi-final since 2016, was forced to answer questions about Nike's ad campaign after beating Karolina Pliskova at Flushing Meadow.

According to ESPN, Gino Fisanotti, a Nike vice president of brand for North America, said: "We believe Colin is one of the most inspirational athletes of this generation, who has leveraged the power of sport to help move the world forward". "Ask if they are insane enough".

Barry Lowenthal, CEO of The Media Kitchen, praised the campaign and said Nike has long proven successful in using celebrity endorsements to promote its brand, a precursor to what is known as influencer marking in the social media age.

But Nike's ad "wades into different water", Grier said.

"I think it's a awful message and a message that shouldn't be sent", Trump said, though he acknowledged Nike's right to decide its own marketing strategy. From NFL teams to pop culture references, it's been great fun hunting down these spin-off advertisements.

However, another Twitter user Teri Shockey countered: "To everyone who is planning to #JustBurnIt, might I suggest you donate your @Nike merch instead?"

After sparking much debate and conversation since his contract with Nike was announced earlier this week, Colin Kaepernick released the extended version of the Nike ad for the company's 30th anniversary campaign. "I mean, he did lose his job and he stood for something I feel like that he wanted to stand for".

Closing his remarks, he said he stood "for anybody who believes in change". The evening culminated in the reveal of the latest LeBron James Nike basketball shoe: a women's sneaker designed by three female African-American designers and inspired by strong African-American women. He threatened Nike in a tweet: "Our Soundman just cut the Nike swoosh off his socks".
