Bezos rips Trump for ‘dangerous’ attacks on the media

  • Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos gives a rare live interview on stage at the Economic Club of Washington D.C. with private equity executive David Rubenstein

Despite his fortune, Bezos has not been a major philanthropic donor and Amazon has been criticised in its home of Seattle, Washington, for its perception as doing little to address problems of the growing homeless population. The wealth that Bezos has amassed hasn't come without controversy, as many critics point to poor working conditions at his facilities while others say he doesn't do enough for the public good.

Bezos has made headlines lately, promising $2 billion to fight homelessness and substandard preschool education after some bad publicity last week when Sen.

Within this, the "Day 1 Families Fund" will support existing non-profit organizations that offer shelter and food to young homeless families.

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said his company "should be scrutinized" by the federal government but urged politicians not to "demonize" or "vilify" big businesses.

The second will operate a network of high-quality, full-scholarship Montessori-inspired preschools.

Interviewed by the club's president, Carlyle Group co-founder David Rubenstein, Bezos also discussed his new charitable commitments, defended the media and his purchase of the Washington Post, and disappointed the D.C. -connected audience by declining to reveal a winning city for Amazon's second headquarters.

"Our lives are better than our great grandparents' lives, and their lives were better than their great grandparents' lives before them", Bezos said Thursday on Twitter. "If you can give somebody a leg up when they're 2, 3 or 4 years old, by the time they get to kindergarten of first grade, they're much less likely to fall behind". "It was a Day 1 outlook that made me reach out to ask for suggestions on approaches to philanthropy previous year".

"I've never sought that title", Bezos said. "It's also the social norms that protect us". But it's really risky to demonize the media. "It's risky to say that they're the enemy of the people". "But we're going to make a final pitch".

"Another way we're raising awareness is through our special #GoGold boxes - you may receive one during September", he added. Amazon has said Sanders' statements about the company were "inaccurate and misleading".

Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post and space exploration company Blue Origin, became the world's wealthiest person this year, with an estimated net worth of $164 billion, according to Bloomberg. "Most important among those will be genuine, intense customer obsession", he tweeted.
