A graphic of Hurricane Florence's path, generated today (Sept. 12) at 2 p.m. ET by the National Hurricane Center, shows an approximate representation of coastal areas under a hurricane warning (red), hurricane watch (pink), tropical storm warning (blue) and tropical storm watch (yellow).

The bottom line is that damage from winds and the storm surge is likely to be more typical of past hurricanes, but the freshwater flooding still looks to create major property damage, which could lead to loss of life if residents haven't heeded the warnings of their local officials.

This storm is not going to be a glancing blow. "Thirty-five inches [of rain] means low bridges, roads will fail, sinkholes will form, many structures over widespread areas will be flooded". "Strengthening is forecast through [Wednesday]".

"This rainfall would produce catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding", the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Fierce winds and massive waves are expected to lash the coasts of North and SC and Virginia even before Florence makes landfall by early Friday, bringing a storm surge as much as 13 feet (4 meters).

At the White House, President Donald Trump both touted the government's readiness and urged people to get out of the way of Florence.

"Don't play games with it".

The NHC measured wave heights of up to 83 feet - the equivalent of a seven-story building - as Florence churned in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday.

States up and down the East Coast have a great potential for severe weather.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, Oregon Democrat, cited an August 31 DHS report in criticizing the department for the transfer of funds.

The governors of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia have all issued mandatory evacuation orders for the coastal communities that are in the storm's bull's eye.

"This is a very unsafe hurricane", Mr McMaster said, adding that the evacuation order for coastal counties was "mandatory, not voluntary".

The American Red Cross said Wednesday it has sent 1,500 disaster workers to the area equipped with 80 emergency response vehicles and 120 trailers of supplies.

CBS forecaster Jeff Glore told viewers: "Hurricane Florence is closing in on the East Coast tonight, ready to deliver what FEMA is calling a "Mike Tyson punch" starting in less than 24 hours".

"But despite that, bad things can happen when you are talking about a storm this size", he added. There are now two more tropical storms in the Atlantic - Joyce and Isaac - and a category 1 hurricane named Helen. Authorities in Chatham County, Georgia, which borders SC and includes the historic port city of Savannah, urged residents who feel unsafe "to evacuate as they see fit". "While we can't attribute this hurricane exclusively to climate change, we do expect these types of intense hurricanes to happen more often as the world warms". North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper warned that staying put would be a grave mistake and said people in evacuation zones "need to get out now". People are encouraged to call state helplines for information about the shelters near them.

Computer simulations - especially the often star-performing European model - push the storm further south, even into SC and Georgia.
