US East Coast braces as Florence forecast to intensify into major hurricane

  • TROPICS: Florence expected to produce damaging winds in Carolinas

When South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency on Saturday, he also called anti-price-gouging laws into effect.

Forecasters say the hurricane's strength is expected to fluctuate but it still will be a risky storm by the time it reaches the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday. It would also mean a "massive rain event" from as far north as Virginia all the way down to SC. Georgia, West Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware, New Jersey, southern Pennsylvania, and eastern Tennessee, Kentucky, and OH could also see strong winds.

WILMINGTON - Hurricane Florence's track takes dead aim at the Wilmington region, with landfall expected early Friday, according to an advisory posted by the National Hurricane Center Monday morning.

Next is a different look at the hurricane's projected path. Keep in mind that this map has an interactive component that you can view here. The hurricane is about 580 miles SSE of Bermuda and 1,240 miles ESE of Cape Fear, North Carolina.

It has been a quieter-than-average hurricane season so far, but things are picking up in a big way: three hurricanes are churning in the Atlantic, with Hurricane Florence rapidly approaching the US East Coast. With maximum sustained winds of 140 miles per hour (220 kph), Florence was due to get even stronger before making landfall on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. "Florence is expected to be an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday".

Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.

Immediately to the north of Virginia, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said his state was also "preparing for the potential of historic, catastrophic and life-threatening flooding".

The hurricane has already prompted mandatory evacuation orders in the Carolinas and Virginia.

In North Carolina, schools had already cancelled classes for the week yesterday as the state braced for what would be only its second brush with a Category 4 hurricane since record-keeping began in the 1800s - the other was 1954's Hazel.

"Based on that information, I have chose to order a mandatory evacuation of Zone A in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore", Northam said Monday. The storm is expected to bring 15 to 30 inches of rain.

Helene - now just southeast of the Cabo Verde islands off the African coast - had winds of 136km/h, and was expected to turn northwest and then north into the open Atlantic by midweek, the NHC said. Hurricane Isaac was expected to lose strength as it reaches the Caribbean, and Helene, much farther out to sea, may veer northward into the open ocean as the 2018 hurricane season reaches its peak.

The storm may affect thousands this week in the southeastern USA, including North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
