Fuel prices rise again, petrol nears Rs 90 in Mumbai

  • Petrol and diesel prices are revised daily by state-run oil firms

TDP had opposed the demand of the opposition parties to bring the fuel products under the ambit of GST, claiming that fuel products were among the major contributors of tax revenues for the states.

The Bharat Bandh called by the Congress and Left on Monday against rising fuel prices and tumbling rupee evoked mixed response in the country as the opposition closed its ranks against the Modi government.

However, a transport department official said the DTC buses and cluster buses were running as usual and no reports of disruption were received so far. In Mumbai, the price of petrol rose to Rs 88.26 per litre today - an increase of 14 paise.

These fuel price figures were released by the BJP. At the same time, the diesel prices too marched ahead and was priced at Rs 78.83 per litre.

In Delhi, a litre of petrol cost Rs 80.87 and diesel cost Rs 72.97 - both marking an increase of Rs 0.14 per litre.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is among the strongest critics of BJP, said she "in principle" supported the issue on which the Bharat Bandh was called but not the bandh.

"60% of our work is heavily reliant on fuel, because of government's taxation policy, we are being forced to live in losses." says Naveen Kumar Gupta, Secretary General of the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC). Stray incidents of violence were reported from various places. Almost 100 Congress leaders and workers were detained during the protest in Mumbai, police said.

As the Congress top brass including party chief Rahul Gandhi targeted the Narendra Modi government at a protest rally at Ramlila Maidan here, the BJP claimed that the bandh was called to divert attention from the hearing in the Delhi High Court on a matter related to the National Herald case involving its "corrupt" leaders. "Diesel, petrol price rise is out of our hands because oil-producing countries have limited production", Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said. Petrol pumps and buses being set ablaze, putting to risk lives. Since mid-August, petrol price has risen by Rs 3.24 a litre and diesel by Rs 3.74 per litre as rupee hit record low against the USA dollar, making imports costlier.

Rajasthan government has already announced a four percentage point cut in VAT on petrol and diesel, while Andhra Pradesh announced a Rs 2 cut in petrol and diesel prices on Monday by slashing sales tax on the fuels.
