Ex-Trump Campaign Adviser George Papadopoulos Sentenced to 14 Days In Prison

  • Former Trump Aide George Papadopoulos Has been Sentenced For Lying to the FBI and he Throws Trump Under the Bus

"I respect the, I always said I respect Mueller's interest in my profile because clearly it's quite alarming, the fact that I marry George Papadopoulos in the middle of this storm", Mangiante Papadopoulos said.

After the judge issued the sentence Friday, Papadopoulos stepped away from the defense table and paused in a long embrace with his wife.

Last October he pleaded guilty to having lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the timing of meetings with alleged go-betweens for Moscow.

He then pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the his contacts with Joseph Mifsud, a London-based professor with connections to high-ranking Russian officials, who told him in late April 2016 that Russians had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.

Papadopoulos was a 29-year-old with relatively little foreign policy experience when Trump named him in March 2016 as part of a team of campaign advisers. He hasn't returned since.

George Papadopoulos told the court in Washington DC he was a "patriotic American" who made a mistake by lying.

"I hope to have a second chance to redeem myself", Papadopoulos told the judge.

"The president of the United States, the commander in Chief, told the world that this was fake news", he added, and complimented Mueller's team for being "professional", while referring his own client as "naive" and a "fool". Papadopolous' attorney argued in court Friday that Trump "hindered that investigation more" than Papadopoulos did. His lawyers said Papadopoulos had suggested brokering a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2016 and that Trump "nodded with approval", according to a court filing last month.

The punishment was far less than the maximum six-month sentence sought by the government but more than the probation that Papadopoulos and his lawyers had asked for.

Mueller's office did not immediately comment on the sentence.

"This was not a noble lie", Moss said.

Told the campaign's priority was to improve relations with Russian Federation, within weeks he made contact with a mysterious professor, Joseph Mifsud, who touted links to the Kremlin.

Memos authored by House Republicans and Democrats, now declassified, show that information about Papadopoulos' contacts with Russian intermediaries triggered the FBI's counterintelligence investigation in July 2016 into potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign.

"This investigation has global implications, and the truth matters", Papadopoulos said.

But he said he was moved by what he viewed as Mr. Papadopoulos's "genuine remorse".

"Judge said he believed Papadopoulos was genuinely remorseful but didn't agree to a probation sentence because he needed to send a message about the seriousness of lying to the FBI", Cheney wrote in a subsequent tweet.

Papadopoulos said he remembered a great deal from that meeting with Downer, which he described as confrontational, but he had no memory of discussing the dirt about Clinton.

"We were going in there to cooperate potentially against those two individuals", he said.

CNN's Tapper noted that Session's attorneys said that Sessions stands by his testimony, and denied encouraging a meeting with Russians.
