  • Novak Djokovic defeats John Millman to reach 11th US Open semifinal

U.S. Open tournament director David Brewer says the tournament's hard courts were purposely slowed down "a touch" in response to players noting in recent years that the surface seemed to be speeding up.

Millman kept up the pressure even when Djokovic tried to shorten points with drop shots.

Millman, whose forehand can be shaky, couldn't sustain it like he did against Federer, when he posted his first-ever victory against a top-10 player and extended Federer's 10-year Flushing drought. Both players stopped play numerous times to change outfits, with the heat making it incredibly uncomfortable on both Millman and Djokovic. She did both in the same year, with her 2010 French Open title helping propel her to No. 7 that year.

Novak Djokovic expressed frustration towards his team during his quarterfinal match against John Millman at the US Open on Wednesday night. "It's literally after two games you're soaking", he said.

Djokovic said he changed his shirt 10 times in his quarter-final victory over Millman in a match which was held up for more than six minutes at 2-2 in the second set when the Australian left the court to change his clothes.

"I was struggling, he was struggling", Djokovic said.

The sixth-seeded Djokovic was far from his best, but ultimately he didn't need to be to defeat the 55-ranked Millman, who fought gamely and entertained the crowd with his hustle and grit.

But it was Djokovic who benefited from the break.

Osaka becomes the first Japanese woman in a Grand Slam semifinal since Kimiko Date at Wimbledon in 1996. Djokovic then served out the set and Millman was in a 0-2 hole.

Deep in the second set, Djokovic, the Serb with perhaps the strongest return game in history, had failed to convert 13 consecutive break points.

"Matches against Nadal and Federer, and Murray as well, have made me the player I am today because those were the guys that I always wanted to win against because those were the guys I had to beat in order to be the No. 1, to win Slams, and have the career that I had behind me".

Earlier Wednesday, Nishikori defeated the man he lost to in the US Open final four years ago, Marin Cilic, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4.

For Osaka, who is 20, this is her first trip past the fourth round at a major.

He could not find a way back into that set but he made Djokovic work very hard for it, and the Serbian's frustration levels increased during the second set as chances came and went.

Osaka had it much easier, continuing what's been a largely dominant run through the draw by winning in just 57 minutes, the third time in her five matches she didn't even have to play an hour.

Rafael Nadal will put his tired body on the line against a merciless Juan Martin del Potro on Friday with a place in the US Open final at stake.

Naomi Osaka, of Japan, reacts after defeating Lesia Tsurenko, of Ukraine, during the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, in NY.

After Suarez Navarro pulled off a stunning upset win over Maria Sharapova earlier in the week, she was eventually overpowered and outmatched by Keys in Wednesday's quarterfinal. She won 20 of her 22 first serves, and she broke Tsurenko's serve five times.
