  • Monitoring Tropical Wave Moving Toward Gulf

Heavy rain bands are expected to continue at a steady pace for much of the day Monday across southeast Florida, where rainfall estimates since midnight were already over an inch in many areas.

Tropical Storm Gordon continued its push toward the northern Gulf Coast and is expected to make landfall by Tuesday night as a hurricane, according to forecasters.

Tropical storm and storm surge warnings were in effect along a long stretch of the central Gulf Coast from Morgan City, Louisiana, including Lake Pontchartrain, to the Alabama-Florida border.

Spotty to scattered showers will increase on Wednesday and Thursday as Tropical Storm Gordon's leftovers weaken well to our west.

The worst conditions are expected to arrive along the north central Gulf Coast by late afternoon Tuesday and, especially, Tuesday evening.

Authorities across the Gulf Coast urged people to stay out of the water - warnings that beach lovers like Cameron Armstrong and Matthew Ewbanks ignored on their visit to Gulf Shores on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Highest winds were 50 miles per hour, but Hurricane Center forecasters said Gordon showed signs of becoming better organized and would likely strengthen. Rain and the flash flooding that can cause are the main threats expected from Gordon along with strong wind and storm surge. The storm is small, but potent, with max winds estimated around 70 miles per hour. Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions.

A Storm Surge Watch means there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, in the indicated locations.

Airlines including Delta, Southwest and Frontier warned that delays and flight cancellations were possible at airports near the Gulf Coast because of the storm, and that they may waive fees for itinerary changes.

"It was fine, just like a thunderstorm", said Pascagoula resident Trey Casey, who had been given the day off from work in anticipation of more serious damage.

Loyola will remain open on Tuesday, Sept. 4 and continue normal operations, despite Tropical Storm Gordon.

The warning is related to potential Tropical Cyclone 7 which, if it organizes into a tropical storm, will become Tropical Storm Gordon. Hurricane Florence was some 2,400 miles (3,900 kilometers) away from the US, and another potential storm was likely to form not far off the coast of Africa and head east.
