Heat policy in effect again at US Open

After she won her first game of the second set, she let out a triumphant, Serena Williams-esque roar.

It was a classic Sloane Stephens shot that appeared tohave shown itself at the end part of the match instead of from the beginning.

Pliskova is the last woman to beat Williams at the U.S. Open, eliminating her in the semifinals two years ago.

Such a run didn't seem likely when she returned to competition in January of 2015, finally healed from a litany of injuries that included debilitating back trouble.

Stephens fought back in the second as she twice broke back having already been broken.

Sevastova said: "It was an incredible journey, this three, four years". "When you're winning a tournament, you think that's normal".

"You think, 'Oh, but in the end it's unbelievable, yeah?' You can't believe, yeah". "I played a solid match so I couldn't really ask for any more".

Sevastova is one of the wiliest players on tour, mixing up slices, spins and angles and generally making life very uncomfortable for a player like Stephens who feeds off consistency of pace. Anastasija Sevastova, the 19-seed from Latvia, stunned Stephens with 6-2, 6-3 victories in straight sets.

The Latvian had no apparent power or pace, but she had the touch and variety to smother Stephens' game.

Stephens got back on serve from the shade once more but was unable to force a third set, as another break from Sevastova left her serving for the match, which she put to bed at the third time of asking.

But Stephens said afterwards that she had been feeling under the weather in the build-up to the match. Even when I did have my break opportunities, I just wasn't playing the points well at all.

Stephens gave credit to her opponent, Sevastova saying "It's hard match and I though she played solid today and obviously the better player won".

She was cruising through her quarter of the draw until a bad sinus infection, sweltering playing conditions and the tenacious Sevastova got the better of her in the last eight.

"And obviously defending a title is very hard, very difficult".

"I can be proud of a lot of things that happened the last couple, the matches that I played, so I'm not going to dwell on it".

NEW YORK -Defending champion Sloane Stephens just keeps sailing along. "I'm just going to try to play the rest of the season as hard as I can and hopefully have some more good results".
