"With [Ant-Man and The Wasp] and now with Captain Marvel and many movies to be announced in the near future, I'm anxious for the time where it's not a novelty that there is a female-led superhero movie, but it is a norm", said Feige. "And my belief was always that they didn't work not because they were female-led stories - they didn't work because they were not particularly good movies".

Brie Larson is set to star as the Air Force Pilot turned superhero, Carol Danvers, in the next movie up in the MCU franchise.

"Captain Marvel" will lead the cover of the next issue of Entertainment Weekly, which will include an exclusive first look at the intergalactic hero.

The Marvel character, Carol Danvers, has had a long and winding road on the way to finally becoming Captain Marvel. Right now, Marvel's only other confirmed female-led film in the works is a long-awaited Black Widow solo-film - however, much of their post-Avengers 4 film slate remains unannounced. He's also a "lowly S.H.I.E.L.D. desk jockey (who hasn't yet met any superheroes)", which is a far cry from his status within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and recruiter of the Avengers.

Larson was, of course, swayed in the end: "Just seeing a character who says how she feels and says what's on her mind and doesn't let people stand in her way is incredibly empowering".

Captain Marvel sidesteps the traditional origin-story template, and when it begins, Carol already has her powers.

One of the bigger reveals, though, is the first look at the Skrulls. "But the [not] waiting for orders is, to some, a character flaw".

"This is not a superhero who's flawless or otherworldly or has some godlike connection", Boden said.

"Captain Marvel" comes to theaters March 8. "But at her core, she has so much heart and so much humanity - and all of its messiness".

Captain Marvel's debut is highly anticipated given the events of "Avengers: Infinity War".
