"This wasn't a battle between a conservative and a liberal, they were both progressives in very good standing", said Peter Ubertaccio, a professor of political science at Stonehill College outside Boston.

The Boston city councilwoman just beat 10-term incumbent progressive Congressman Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary in MA, securing the Democratic nomination for Congress for Massachusetts's 7th district.

She was endorsed by fellow congressional upstart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who knocked off veteran Rep. Joe Crowley of NY in June.

It also comes after (in a variation on the theme) Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a Democrat, made history by becoming Florida's first black gubernatorial nominee last week, defeating frontrunner Gwen Graham.

Pressley, who will likely win November's congressional race in heavily Democratic Boston, won almost 60 percent of the vote and would become the first black woman from MA elected to the House. Pressley was endorsed by NY congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives.

Pressley shares many of her positions with Ocasio-Cortez, but stops short of describing herself as a socialist.

Pressley cried tears of joy after receiving the news of her win.

Capuano is now the fourth House lawmaker to lose re-election in a 2018 midterm primary, following Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-N.C.), Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) and Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.). He also wavered back and forth on impeaching President Trump since previous year, and both candidates have admitted that they would likely vote the same way on key issues. That I kept steadfast about the hope of our world, and more importantly to the promise of the Democratic party.

Pressley and other insurgents have drawn the attention of new voters whose support Democrats will need again, said María Urbina, national political director of Indivisible, a nationwide network that formed past year to resist Trump.

Capuano campaigned on his congressional experience, and his ability to use his connections to bring federal money to Boston.

Holding true to the event's intent, Pressley encouraged others to continue their hard work for others on the Democratic ticket. She's also been outspoken about being a rape survivor.

Pressley, 44, is a Chicago native, former community organizer, and former political aide who worked for Democrats such as Senator John Kerry.

Pressley's win echoed that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's over the long-time representative Joe Crowley in NY, and the ascent of Stacey Abrams in Georgia, who - if she wins - will become the first African-American female governor in U.S. history.

Democrats need to pick up 23 seats to take a majority in the House of Representatives, and two to take control of the Senate, if they are to serve as an effective foil to Trump's agenda.
