Former Arizona US Sen. Jon Kyl to replace John McCain

Former Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., right, answers a question after Gov. Doug Ducey, R-Ariz., announced that Kyl will fill Sen.

Coughlin said some names that had been floated as potential appointees to McCain's seat, including state Treasurer Eileen Klein, could pop up again - especially if Ducey has to make another appointment to replace Kyl. At that time, Arizona voters will pick the person who will serve out McCain's term, which runs through 2022. But Kyl, who was sworn in Wednesday, has only committed to serving through at least the end of this Congress. Although he has worked closely with the White House on the supreme court nomination, Kyl, much like McCain, has been critical of Trump's presidency. More recently, he guided Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, as he navigated meetings with senators. I wish I could say the same for Arizona's other Senator, but that was not my experience with [John] McCain.

Meghan McCain, the late senator's daughter, also praised the appointment, saying she "can think of no one better to keep fighting for the country and state he held so dear. There is no one more qualified and Arizona is well served", Flake tweeted.

His appointment now allows him to vote for the nomination.

The GOP is hoping Kyl will be a more reliable partisan vote than McCain, whose opposition to a partial repeal of President Obama's health care law pitched the party into turmoil past year.

Once he is formally installed in the Senate, Kyl's first major vote is likely to be on the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"I think McCain would be very happy with the pick".

Ducey made his selection primarily on the basis of Kyl's reputation and ability to hit the ground running in the Senate, one of the people close to him said.

In the year since McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer, Ducey - who faces a tough re-election race this year - had refused to talk about who he might appoint to the seat. "Now, Sen. Kyl can cast a vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation".

Kyl said he did not "really have a relationship" with President Trump, having met him only once.

Ducey said he hopes he will serve longer.

Every single day that Jon Kyl represents #Arizona in the U.S. Senate is a day our state is well-served. This is why he accepted the position with the stipulation that he would not commit beyond the end of this congressional session. And if he does choose to stay, the GOP would (almost certainly) forfeit the advantage of incumbency when defending that seat during the next presidential election.

Ducey, responding to Cindy McCain on Twitter, said he is "deeply grateful to Senator Kyl for agreeing to succeed his friend and colleague of so many years".

Kyl will be entering a narrowly divided senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November.
