Democrats disrupt start of Kavanaugh hearing with protest over withheld documents

  • With Republicans hoping to move the Supreme Court to the right for years to come a Senate committee is beginning hearings for President Donald Trump's second nominee to the court. Trump is seen above at the White House on Friday

"Judge Kavanaugh was not responsible for the Parkland school shooting that killed my daughter", he said, placing blame instead on local law enforcement and school officials.

Kavanaugh also is likely to be questioned about his views on investigating sitting presidents and the probe by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and Trump's 2016 campaign.

The soul-sucking scrum that was day one of Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation hearing started out, ostensibly anyway, with spats over the late production of documents related to Kavanaugh's tenure at the White House more than a dozen years ago. The source said Kavanaugh's security detail quickly stepped in because they did not know who the person was. "So sad to see!"

A protester is removed during a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court. Theirs wasn't the only coordinated dissent in the room ― protesters also disrupted the proceedings.

Barring a major surprise over the next two days of questioning, the committee is expected to vote along party lines to send Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate.

"Sending out fundraising emails DURING A HEARING about opposition to a Supreme Court nominee is not the job of a Senator".

"We can not possibly move forward, Mr. Chairman, with this hearing", she declared.

"We have not been given an opportunity to have a meaningful hearing on this nominee", said Sen. Feinstein is asking Kavanaugh about his dissent in Heller when he as on the D.C. Circuit. Grassley, after being called out for conducting the hearing with "mob rule", repeatedly slammed the Democrats as being out of order.

Democratic Senator Cory Booker appealed to Grassley's "sense of decency and integrity" and said the withholding of the documents by Republicans and the White House left lawmakers unable to properly vet Kavanaugh.

Grassley noted that despite his staff being available around the clock to help Democrats access records, not a single Democratic senator showed up.

Democrats seized on Kavanaugh's comments in which he supported an expansion of a United States president's immunity from prosecution - a dramatic shift from his recommendation for strong action against then-president Bill Clinton when Kavanaugh assisted in a 1990s investigation against him. That is, frankly, also not normal for Democrats and their handling of Trump judicial nominees. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowsi, one of the swing votes that could stop the nomination, dismissed the Tuesday's protests as "a lot of drama", according to the outlet. Kamala Harris, D-Calif. She pointed to Kavanaugh's work investigating then-President Bill Clinton in the 1990s with independent counsel Kenneth Starr, litigating the contested presidential election of 2000 and work in the George W. Bush White House.

If confirmed, Kavanaugh would move the court, already majority conservative, further to the right.

It appears Republicans have the numbers to confirm Kavanaugh given they hold a slim majority in the Senate and no GOP senators have yet come out against his appointment.
