DeChambeau's win in MA makes him the second player - after Vijay Singh in 2008 to win the first two legs of the FedEx Cup play-offs.

US captain Jim Furyk will name three of his four wildcard picks on Tuesday, and after DeChambeau's recent successes, it is unthinkable he will not be included among them.

DeChambeau earned a spot on the team thanks to three wins this year (Memorial Tournament, The Northern Trust and Dell Technologies Championship). He shot a final-round seven-under 64 to remain number one in the world with Brooks Koepka breathing down his neck. He approached the event with all the enthusiasm of a trip to the dentist in his younger days but has warmed to the team format in recent years.

The event was limited to the top 100 players in the FedEx Cup standings, with 98 of those eligible participating in the tournament.

Thomas Bjorn will name his captain's picks tomorrow.

Cameron Smith of Australia tried to make a run at him with a pair of late birdies, but DeChambeau answered with a birdie on No. 15 to keep his lead at two shots.

Opening the day one stroke behind leader Abraham Ancer, DeChambeau took control with three straight birdies to finish the front nine.

The 25-year-old laced his drive, but it came to rest less than 5cm into the medium rough at the end of the fairway and although he was only 185m from the flag, his second shot was impaired sufficiently by the rough to leave it well short and in the hazard.

Woods, a 14-time major champion, will play in his first Ryder Cup since 2012 having recovered from back surgery and impressed over the past year.

He barely scraped into the field for the BMW Championship starting outside Philadelphia on Thursday, where the top 70 in the standings will tee it up. He played with Keith Mitchell, another PGA Tour rookie, who birdied his last two holes for a 69.

Tiger Woods was confirmed last night as one of Jim Furyk's picks for the American team. Furyk will announce his final captain's pick after this week's BMW Championship. Woods closed with a 71 and tied for 24th.

Mickelson has played a record 11 consecutive Ryder Cups and qualified automatically every time.

DeChambeau birdied the 16th and 17th holes then landed his 237-yard second shot at the par-five 18th just two feet from the cup for a tap-in eagle for the clubhouse lead at 12-under par. The top 30 after that event will move on to the Tour Championship.
