  • Roger Federer 'In New York you do things you shouldn't be doing'

Roger Federer failed to cope with stifling conditions at the U.S. Open on Monday and suffered a shock 3-6 7-5 7-6 (7) 7-6 (3) defeat to unseeded Australian John Millman in the last 16.

It was most striking during Lesia Tsurenko's 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-2 win against Marketa Vondrousova, in which both players seemed affected by the temperature and mugginess.

With the US Open's heat advisory put back into effect, the pair traded punishing groundstrokes under the blazing sun and it was Cibulkova who was often pinned well behind the baseline and at the mercy of her opponent.

The first obvious signs of trouble for Federer came far earlier, in the second game of the second set.

The 29-year-old, who was born in Brisbane and is now ranked 55th in the world, was up two sets to one against the Swiss juggernaut and prevailed in a gripping fourth-set tie-break to win 3-6, 7-5, 7-6. 7-6.

Asked whether he thought during that time away about returning to the height of his powers, Djokovic replied: "I have imagined. I have so much respect for Roger and everything he's done for the game", he added.

He reached the quarterfinals for an 11th consecutive appearance in NY as he bids for a third U.S. Open championship and 14th Grand Slam trophy.

The No. 21 seed from Japan returned to the tour early this year, building his confidence back with a victory in a Challenger Tour event, then reached the final in Monte Carlo and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, where he lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Federer tore through the opening set in 33 minutes and served for the second at 5-4, before Millman saved two set points to level at 5-5.

He will next face No. 7 seed Marin Cilic who ousted No. 10 seed David Goffin 7-6 (6), 6-2, 6-4.

Maria Sharapova won the U.S. Open as a teenager.

An elbow injury forced the 31-year-old out of the 2017 tournament though Djokovic reached the final 12 months previously, beaten by Stan Wawrinka.

The defending US Open champion would not be denied and fired his seventh ace on match point to end the three hour, 20-minute tussle 6-3 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-4.

The 29-year-old Australian had never competed in the fourth round of a Grand Slam prior to this year's event but took his opportunity with both hands as he took out the 20-time major victor 3-6 7-5 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3). She still and looked tired to start the second, leaning on her racket between points while falling behind 2-0.

'I felt like a bit of a deer in the headlights to begin with, my feet weren't moving.

The Ukrainian got some help from her opponent.
