President Trump stepped up his criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday, hammering him over criminal charges recently brought against two Republican congressmen, which may jeopardize the GOP's chances of holding those seats in the midterm elections. "Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time", Trump said in his tweet.

Trump did not address the charges, just the politics. Duncan Hunter of California and Chris Collins of NY for alleged misuse of campaign funds and alleged insider trader, respectively.

"The Democrats, none of whom voted for Jeff Sessions, must love him now".

The attack on Mr Sessions comes after Mr Trump last week said that Mr Sessions was safe in his job at least until after the November mid-term elections. The Dems all hated him, wanted him out, thought he was disgusting - UNTIL I FIRED HIM!

Contrary to Trump's claim that both indictments were the result of "long-running Obama-era investigations", the DOJ did not open its investigation into Hunter until March 2017, after Trump took office.

Two of Trump's regular critics in the GOP Senate were quick to argue that Trump was trying to politicize the Justice Department. Sen.

Trump's attacks on Sessions, and his efforts to force his attorney general to quit his post after Sessions recused himself from the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election, are part of an obstruction investigation into the president by special counsel Robert Mueller and his team.

"This tweet alone may be an impeachable offense", Toobin stated.

While there have been exceptions, longstanding protocol holds that the Justice Department should be left to operate free of political influence from the White House.

Though Trump argued that the investigations began during the Obama administration, the charges against Collins - which include securities and wire fraud - stem from actions he allegedly took a year ago, and the Justice Department launched a criminal investigation into Hunter's use of campaign funds after a referral from the Federal Election Committee.

But some now see him as a bulwark against attacks on the Justice Department.

The Fox analyst said it seemed inappropriate for Trump to weigh in and say the DOJ should not be investigating his congressional allies because it could hurt the party in the midterm elections. Trump did not have any public events Monday.

Both lawmakers have pleaded not guilty.

Trump's second tweet is a lie.
