The incredible Roger Federer shot that left Nick Kyrgios stunned

  • Federer breezed past Kyrgios

Gilles Muller, the first qualifier in the US Open quarter-final since 1999 was Roger's next rival and Federer needed two hours and 24 minutes to score a 7-6 6-4 7-6 triumph in the match with a single break of serve! Isner defeated No. 25 Milos Raonic of Canada 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 and now faces 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro who pounded 18 forehand winners in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 victory over No. 20 Borna Coric and hasn't dropped a set through four matches.

He defied his 37 years to reach an acutely-angled Kyrgios slice and flashed a victor around the post of the net.

"Definitely a bit of luck and good feet", Federer said of the shot that denied Kyrgios a game point - although the Australian would go on to hold for 4-3 in the third set.

Teenage sensation Alex de Minaur joined Kyrgios in bowing out, but in far more gracious fashion, going down 4-6 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-5 in a five-set cliffhanger against seventh-seeded 2014 Open champion Marin Cilic.

However, there was one shot in the third set which caught the eye of everyone there at the court and those watching on the television sets. In comments to reporters after the match, the Australian referred to the shot as "almost unreal". "When he gets in front, there's not much you can do".

In his post-match press conference, Kyrgios was asked about the shot.

The Aussie star took to social media to congratulate the 37-year-old and predicted Federer could well be on his way to the 21st Grand Slam of his career. Federer was among those critical of the umpire's conduct.

Next for the 36-year-old American comes a quarterfinal against 2016 runner-up Karolina Pliskova, who beat Williams in the U.S. Open semifinals that year.

That began after Maria Sharapova eliminated No. 10 Jelena Ostapenko, 6-3, 6-2, to improve to 23-0 in night matches at the US Open.

On Saturday, the young guns showed no signs of breaking the stranglehold of the three men who collectively own 50 Grand Slam titles and also split the season's first three majors.

Kerber didn't blame a domino effect for her departure.

"At tour events, I lose as well, there's just more tour events", Zverev said of his poor Grand Slam results this year during his postmatch news conference.

"You have sometimes days where you are trying everything, but it's not really working as you wish", she said.

Sixth-seeded Caroline Garcia of France also departed, beaten 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) by Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro, and Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova sprang a surprise, too, with a 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 7-6 (7/1) victory over 13th-seeded Belgian Kiki Bertens. But, he may need to step out of his comfort zone and play more aggressively if he wants to win this match.
