  • Liu Qiangdong also known as Richard Liu is the founder of the Beijing-based e-commerce site

Mr. Liu was attending a weeklong residency at the University of Minnesota from August 26 to September 1, where he is enrolled as a student at the Carlson School of Management's China Doctor of Business Administration, the school said in a statement.

The company is backed by Walmart Inc, Alphabet Inc's Google and China's Tencent Holdings.

According to the Financial Times, two people familiar with the case said it involves another Chinese student at the university. According to its website, the program is designed for top-level executives working in China, and the average age of participants is 50.

Liu, the 45-year-old chief executive and founder of the e-commerce giant JD.com, was released Saturday from the Hennepin County Jail, with booking records showing no posted bail.

University spokeswoman Emma Bauer in a statement declined to comment further and referred questions to the Minneapolis Police Department.

Also known as Richard Liu, the founder of the Beijing-based e-commerce site was arrested in Minneapolis late Friday on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct, jail records show.

Liu started the company that would become JD.com (JD.O) in 1998, spending 12,000 yuan ($1,760.54) of his savings to lease a 4-square-meter retail space in Beijing's technology hub of Zhongguancun.

The foreign ministry said it is looking into the circumstances surrounding Liu's arrest.

"We are now seeking information and verification from the relevant USA departments", foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular Beijing news conference on Monday.

The firms will marry JD's supply chain and logistics experience with Google technology to create "next generation" personalised retail service in regions including Southeast Asia, the United States and Europe, both companies said in a statement. He is also known for his marriage to Chinese internet celebrity Zhang Zetian.

Liu is the founder of JD.com, one of China's most popular e-commerce sites.

That proved key to JD.com's rise, culminating in its listing in the United States in 2014.

Liu has long fostered a reputation for good behavior, playing up JD.com's tough stance on counterfeits. In 2015, a model said she was sexually assaulted by a man after they had partied at Liu's Australian penthouse.

Longwei Xu, a property developer, was later convicted of the crime.

Like Jack Ma, Richard Liu made history in China with his rags to riches story.
