Citing current and former officials and associates of Deripaska, the Times reported that investigators were hoping for information from Deripaska on Russian organized crime during a September 2015 meeting and, in a meeting a year later, on possible Russian aid to Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. They discussed the matter when meeting for breakfast on July 30, 2016, according to the report.
"Absolutely", Hayden said. "And I don't know Mr. Ohr, but in anticipation of our conversation tonight, I kind of sent a note out to folks I know who might know him, and the description I got back from him was competent, thorough, and honest".
The people who discussed Ohr's interview were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the closed session and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Ohr, a 30-year Justice Department veteran, has been attacked repeatedly by Trump and his conservative allies for his connection to Steele and the opposition research dossier containing salacious and unverified information on Trump and Russian Federation.
Republicans have charged that the Steele dossier, which contains some salacious and unverified intelligence on Trump and Russian Federation, was inappropriately used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to obtain a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
It was unclear from Ohr's interview with lawmakers whether Steele had been directly told that or had picked up the information through his contacts.
Steele and Ohr, at the time of the election a senior official in the deputy attorney general's office, had first met a decade earlier and bonded over a shared interest in global organized crime. They said he was being stripped of his associate deputy attorney post as part of a planned internal reorganization that would have occurred anyway, people familiar with Ohr's account say.
He met again soon after with one of the officials, who told him Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein did not believe he could continue in his position as head of a drug grant-distribution program. President Trump has questioned the reasoning behind keeping him on board in recent days. Weeks earlier, in August, Manafort left Trump's campaign, which he had led for five months. Who is Bruce Ohr, and why is Trump tweeting about not only about him but Ohr's wife as well?
In a tweet Thursday, the president claimed Nellie is a Russian Federation expert who can fluently speak the language. She worked for Fusion GPS where she was paid a lot. McQuade says, previously, career Justice Department people found Trump's criticisms of Ohr to be bewildering.
