Hamilton calls Vettel-collision "massive turning point"

  • Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton celebrates in the pit lane after winning the race at Monza

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has equaled Michael Schumacher's record of "5 Italian Grand Prix wins" and has denied Ferrari a win in their own backyard in Monza.

Although the German fought back from 19th place to finish fourth, he was seething after his title deficit to Hamilton increased to 30 points with seven races remaining.

The collision resulted in Vettel spinning his Ferrari and damaging the front wing while Hamilton's vehicle survived undamaged and he went on to win the race and increase his championship lead to 30 points, AFP reported. Vettel claimed Hamilton hadn't left him room, but the stewards chose to take no further action, and the championship leader downplayed the contact after taking his third win in four races.

"Getting past Sebastian at the beginning was clearly a massive turning point".

"I want to give it up to Ferrari who put up a great challenge and gave us a great fight", said Hamilton. Then I had room left and no chance anymore.

"For sure I think we had the speed [to win] but then the tyre went and there was nothing left in the end on the left rear", Raikkonen said after the race. "Take care of the tyres, we need to bring the vehicle home", said Ferrari.

Bottas finished third just ahead of Vettel and Verstappen, who would have been on the podium had he not received a five-second penalty for causing a collision with the Finnish driver.

"It was a losing battle since that point, but I tried, it was impossible in the end, unfortunately".

The move turned out to be devisive, allowing Hamilton to attack Raikkonen for the lead of the race.

"We're all working flat out right now in every part of the team, and we have work to do tonight as well - but there are some areas where we can see deficits, so I hope we can make a little step for qualifying." .

Both drivers complained on team radio but an investigation decided that no further action was necessary.

"I'm not too anxious [about the points difference]. It definitely happens in football and probably here more than I've noticed in others but it is the way it is", added the Briton.

"I think it was 100% Sebastian's fault".

"I'm really really proud of them, because obviously when you're in a big sea of red and there's the booing and. you notice there's one guy standing there with a flag or there's a kid waving it and you can imagine being surrounded by that, feeling the heat on him", he said. We have to deliver results like this more often.

"But then what can you do when you get spun around?"

"We knew they had the pace this weekend".
