Trump notified Congress on Friday that he plans to sign an agreement in 90 days with Mexico to replace Nafta and hopes Canada can brought on board, too.

'There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal, ' Trump tweeted during services for the late Arizona Sen.

"As we've said all week, we're working toward a modernized NAFTA, a modernized NAFTA that will be good for Canada and the middle class", said Cameron Ahmad. "Congress should not interfere with these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off", the tweet read.

Trilateral trade between the NAFTA countries has exceeded one trillion dollars annually in recent years, according to a 2017 report by the US Congressional Research Service.

According to a published account of the president's leaked remarks, Trump told Bloomberg News Thursday that he is not entertaining any compromises at all in discussions with Canada - but he can not admit his posture publicly because "it's going to be so insulting they're not going to be able to make a deal".

On Twitter, Trump posted, "Wow, I made OFF THE RECORD COMMENTS to Bloomberg concerning Canada, and this powerful understanding was BLATANTLY VIOLATED".

Sources also confirmed to Global News on Friday that Canadian officials confronted their American counterparts during trade talks about remarks allegedly made by Trump saying the possible NAFTA deal with Canada would be "totally on our terms".

When the Trump administration notified Congress previous year that it meant to renegotiate NAFTA, critics note that it said it would enter talks with both Canada and Mexico. It will hold another round of talks on Wednesday that would suggest whether Canada will agree to the US' demands, said an analyst in Geneva, who asked not to be quoted.

"My negotiating counterparty is Ambassador [Robert] Lighthizer, and as I've said, he has brought good faith and goodwill to the table".

"They've essentially divided Canada and Mexico".

Canadian officials accused the US side of refusing to offer concessions.

Daniel Dale, the Toronto Star reporter who published off-record comments from President Donald Trump to Bloomberg reporters, in which Trump said he would not compromise with Canada in trade negotiations, denied Saturday that the Bloomberg reporters themselves leaked the comments.

He said the United States would have to give six months notice to both Canada and Mexico if it intends to withdraw. He was involved in tough negotiations for the Canada-U.S.

The crucial phase of the US-Canada talks began Tuesday, after Mexican officials spent five weeks shuttling to Washington to work out key issues on auto trade and worker rights.

Mr. Trump wants Canada to end its tariffs on dairy products, which can run almost 300 percent.

Congress members from both parties as well as USA business leaders also want Canada included to preserve the more than $1 trillion in trade under the 24-year-old trilateral deal. So, overall, workers aren't doing as well'. "If you break off one member of this agreement, you break it all, and that would be bad news for USA businesses, for American jobs, and for economic growth", Donohue said.

Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland held four meetings with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to try to bridge differences to preserve the three-nation trade pact with the US and Mexico. Mexico swiftly retaliated with import tariffs on some American goods, including steel, apples and pork.
