The incident in question occurred between the second and third sets of a women's match on Tuesday.
When the 28-year-old returned from a 10-minute heat break in NY on Tuesday she realised her shirt was back-to-front and walked to the back of the court to pull off and adjust her top, briefly exposing her sports bra. "US Open umpire hits french player with a code violation after she quickly turns her shirt around because it was on backward". It reportedly took less than 15 seconds.
Cornet, who had been running late getting back to the court, reacted with surprise when she was then handed a code violation by chair umpire Christian Rask. "Not fair. Not right", one outraged fan said on Twitter.
The Women's Tennis Association rules say women are not allowed to change while on the court, according to the Daily Mail.
Earlier Wednesday, USTA spokesman Chris Widmaier told CNN by phone that Cornet was given a code violation for "changing her shirt at the baseline". However, many pointed out that several male players, such as Novak Djokovic and others, celebrate victories by taking off their shirt.
Novak Djokovic of Serbia takes a break from the heat while playing against Marton Fucsovics of Hungary during their Day 2 2018 US Open Men's Singles match at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in NY on August 28, 2018.
While Cornet was willing to extend the USTA an olive branch she was far less forgiving to her own tennis federation which recently introduced a dress code for the French Open that will ban Serena Williams's black catsuit.
In fact, the sport's Extreme Heat Policy itself borders on sexism.
"Alize Cornet came back to court after 10 minute heat break", tweeted Murray.
Temperatures have reached the high 40s during this year's US Open.
"Male players do it. and she was covered the whole time. Alize did nothing wrong", read the statement on a concluding note.
Women and men may receive equal pay for work at Grand Slams but a double standard that surfaced at the U.S. Open when Alize Cornet was slapped with a code violation for changing her shirt on court continued to spark outrage over equality on Wednesday. "This is not considered a code violation", it reads. Cornet was facing Johanna Larsson in NY, where the organisers of the US Open have already issued a heat warning. We have clarified the policy to ensure this will not happen moving forward. "Unsportsmanlike conduct. But the men can change shirts on court".
Tournament officials said in a statement Wednesday that all players can change their shirts when sitting in the player chair, adding that female players can also change their shirts in a private location near the court if it is available without being assessed a bathroom break.
