He did not have any information on the people who were killed, including their ages, genders or where they were from.

More than 33 patients have been transported to local area hospitals with injuries, some are said to be in critical condition, ABC News reported, quoting authorities.

Multiple people were killed and dozens more were injured when a semi-trailer and a Greyhound bus carrying 49 passengers crashed on a northwest New Mexico interstate on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

All but six people involved in the crash were taken to hospitals.

It was not immediately known how many were injured or what the conditions of the injured were. The driver of the truck sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, the state police said.

Officials said the truck driver from Thursday's collision is expected to recover. The truck's trailer is in the median.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced it would conduct an investigation. In a statement, the New Mexico State police said their identities would not be released until their next of kin were notified.

A motorist who came upon the scene described it as chaotic as passengers were on the ground and people were screaming.

Police say a tractor-trailer hauling produce blew a tire on eastbound Interstate 40 and careered across the median, striking a Greyhound bus full of passengers.

Another witness, Marc Gonzales, said the scene was a "complete catastrophe", with skid marks on the side of the road.

"It was an awe-inspiring awful scene", he said.

Truck driver Santos Soto III shot video showing the front of the Greyhound sheared off and the semi split open, with its contents strewn across the highway. Passengers tried to climb out the bus windows and bystanders grabbed ladders from their vehicles to try to rescue them, he said.

Benge said it was one of the worst crashes he has seen in his 35 years of driving.

"I'm a pretty strong person and I broke down and cried for at least 30 minutes", he added.

Christopher Jones said he got to the accident site just after the crash.

If you suspect someone you know to have been on that bus, the McKinley County Emergency Management has established a phone number for loved ones and family members looking for additional information: 505-722-2002.

The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, near the New Mexico/Arizona border, according to a news release from the New Mexico State Police (NMSP).

The crash forced the closure of the westbound lanes of the interstate and traffic was backing up as travelers were being diverted.
