  • John McCain, senator and former presidential candidate, dies at 81

After Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy of MA died in 2009, President Barack Obama ordered flags at the White House be flown at half-staff for five days. But his condition did not stop him from taking the political centre stage, especially by railing against what he saw as the excesses of President Donald Trump.

"Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 pm on August 25, 2018". But as the President spent Sunday at his Virginia golf course, the statement never went out, the source said. Instead, Trump sent out a much shorter and symbolically less-meaningful tweet. Trump wrote on Twitter.

The president also said several members of his administration will attend McCain's services.

Meanwhile, governors from Ohio Republican John Kasich to New York Democrat Andrew Cuomo ordered that public flags in their respective states remain at half-staff to honor McCain. A private funeral will follow at the Naval Academy Chapel and McCain is to be buried at the academy cemetery. "Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect [McCain's] service to our country", he said.

Not being invited to preside over a great national occasion will surely sting for a man like Trump, who relishes the theatrics of the presidency.

He will be the third person in the last 40 years to lie in the museum rotunda: Arizona State Sen.

Mr McCain was the presidential candidate of the Republican Party in 2008.

"We are 325 million opinionated, vociferous individuals".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a longtime ally of McCain, said that the decision came "in coordination with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi". "At John's best, he showed us what that means". President's George W. Bush and Barack Obama, both former presidential campaign opponents to McCain, are slated to deliver eulogies.

"John McCain was a true American hero".

McCain, who served in Congress and the military as a Navy pilot and is remembered as a war hero after surviving more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, will also have memorial services at the National Cathedral and in Annapolis, Maryland, where he will be laid to rest, the source said.

Each tribute can be read at face value, as specifically applying only to McCain.

"They're not the president, they're not the president", Berman interjected. McCain, referred to as the the "conscience of the Senate" called his time in office in the nation's capitol "the most important job I have had in my life".

However, a presidential proclamation can allow the flag to stay at half-staff longer.

In Europe, there is deep concern about Trump's commitment to Western values and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - so it is impossible to read tributes to McCain from people like Stoltenberg in any other context.

White House Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined to comment on reports that Trump had refused to issue a statement prepared by staff praising the heroism and life of McCain.
