At the same time Cohen was pleading guilty, a federal jury in Virginia convicted Manafort of bank fraud charges, the first conviction for special counsel Robert Mueller.

Cohen pleaded guilty to tax fraud charges as well as campaign finance violations, alleging he acted at the direction of then-candidate Trump.

But by the time Trump weighed in on the two events on Wednesday morning, it was clear that his opinion of his two former employees differs wildly.

Michael Cohen's transformation from loyal retainer promising to take a bullet for Donald Trump to Judas spotlights the strong arm of the USA law and how determined the president's former attorney is to limit his time in prison.

"'Justice" took a 12 year old tax case, among other things", Trump wrote on Twitter, "applied tremendous pressure on him and, unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to "break" - make up stories to get a "deal.' Such respect for a fearless man!"

"A large number of counts, ten, could not even be decided in the Paul Manafort case". Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations that the lawyer said he carried out in coordination with Trump.

"Later on I knew", Trump told Fox News Channel when asked if he knew about the payments. Cohen admitted in court that Trump had directed him to pay off two women-adult film star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal-to keep them quiet in order to influence the 2016 election. Michael "The Rat" Cohen is how one person close to the president privately described him, a CNN journalist has reported.

In his first reaction to the Cohen bombshell, Trump asserted in a series of tweets that his former lawyer's campaign finance violations were "not a crime". Scoring eight guilty convictions against Manafort is a significant credibility boost for Mueller's team, which has been accused by Trump and his allies of conducting a "witch hunt" against the president.

Donald Trump insisted on Wednesday (Aug 22) he did nothing wrong after his longtime attorney implicated him in illicit hush payments made before the 2016 election, as experts warned the legal maelstrom swirling around the Republican leader could further threaten his presidency. "So that is the functional equivalent of the word 'cooperate.' I don't know why ... they didn't use the word", Davis said.

Manafort and Cohen probably could have continued committing financial crimes and making lots of money for the rest of their working lives if only Trump hadn't won the election and become ensnared in a special counsel investigation.

As part of a tax evasion scheme, Michael Cohen failed to tell the Internal Revenue Service about a $30,000 profit from the sale of a French luxury handbag. Manafort faces separate charges in September in the District of Columbia that include acting as a foreign agent.

A summit between the two leaders in Helsinki in July was the final straw for Cohen, his lawyer Lanny Davis told Sky News, prompting him to seriously question Mr Trump's loyalty to the U.S. and suggesting "almost a mental instability in the man".

'I don't know if they're ready to donate, Lanny, ' Kelly responded.

Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, has said the payments were made to spare the president and his family embarrassment and were unrelated to the campaign. And with the legal risks for the president mounting, it's safe to say the Cohens are off Donald Trump's Christmas card list.

Cohen's accusation increases political pressure for Trump ahead of November's congressional elections where Democrats are trying to regain control of the House of Representatives and Senate.

The president has yet to say whether he would sit down with Mueller, though reports indicate that White House Counsel Don McGahn has been cooperating extensively with the investigation.
