Imran's party Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) had invited the likes of Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar along with Sidhu.

In a televised speech shortly after the July 25 elections, Imran Khan vowed to work for the poorest of poor and called for dialogue with India. Khan's only challenger could be Shahbaz Sharif, but his Pakistan Muslim League party won only 92 seats in last month's elections.

Pakistani lawmakers have endorsed Imran Khan as their next prime minister, ahead of a ceremony on Saturday that should see the World Cup cricket hero sworn in as the new leader of the nuclear-armed nation.

Analysts say, as prime minister, Khan would be tested on several fronts, from dealing with an urgent foreign currency shortage to managing a tense relationship with the United States.

"The Secretariat of the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf has invited me to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Imran Khan as the Prime Minister of Pakistan on August 18 at Islamabad", Sidhu said.

In a house of 342, the winning candidate was required to obtain at least 172 votes to become the Prime Minister.

Khan won the July 25 election, but did not have enough seats for an outright majority, forcing him to partner with smaller parties and independents in order to form a government.

PTI candidates were also voted Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly this week, putting Khan in a strong position to carry forward his legislative agenda.
